Representatives of the eight European universities of the CIVIS Alliance met to discuss the common vision and objectives of the partnership in order to come up with a long-term project. The meeting took place at the University of Bucharest, between the 8th-11th of January 2019.
Rectors, presidents, vice-rectors and members of academic community of partner universities agreed that CIVIS Alliance should be a long term project, envision of of an innovative and responsible education area, of cultural exchanges and citizenship action throughout Europe, from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
We are committed to accomplish the aforesaid essential challenges and aimed to bridge, on the long term, the European area, the Mediterranean area and the African area. The CIVIS Alliance would create and support a multilingual environment, with almost 500.000 students, teachers and other personnel members of eight European universities, which joined forces: Aix Marseille Université (France), National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), University of Bucharest (Romania), Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain), Sapienza Università di Roma (Italia), Stockholms Universitet (Sweden), Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany).
Inclusiveness is at the core of this transnational academic alliance. The CIVIS Alliance aims to level disparities, to increase access to education and to create real opportunities for the success of our students.
This alliance of the eight universities aims to strengthen the process of European integration through education, research and innovation. Among its other objectives, CIVIS alliance intends to develop a European citizenship and to solve the societal problems faced by their countries of origin..
The European Civic Alliance – CIVIS supports local initiatives and sustainable cooperation on all levels and will be involved in solving the current problems of its citizens and institutions. Thus, the Consortium aims to be an important vector of change and innovation in areas such as social development, culture, environment, health and energy and also to proactively react to challenges in integrating education, research and innovation activities.
It is research excellence that would become essential for the new academic alliance. Through its research excellence and interdisciplinary approach, the alliance would strengthen the current research networks of our eight universities. CIVIS will act both locally, through direct involvement in the problems of its communities, as well as globally, by approaching issues of sustainability and sustainable global development.
The CIVIS meeting hosted by the University of Bucharest was attended by Yvon Berland (President, Aix Marseille Université), Napoleon Maravegias (Vice-Rector, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), Mircea Dumitru (Rector, University of Bucharest), Yvon Englert (Rector, Université Libre de Bruxelles), Rafael Garesse (Rector, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid), Eugenio Gaudio (Sapienza Università di Roma), Astrid Söderbergh Widding (President, Stockholms Universitet) and Monique Scheer (Vice-Rector, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen).
