Abstract
The project Learner Corpus of Romanian (LECOR). Collection, Annotation and Applications (PN-III-P1-1.1-TE-2019-1066, funded by UEFISCDI) will be carried out over a period of two years starting from 15th September 2020, at University of Bucharest (Solomon Marcus Center for Computational Linguistics, of the Faculty of Letters: http://clc.litere.ro/).
A learner corpus is an electronic collection of authentic FL (Foreign Language)/SL (Second Language) textual data conforming to explicit design criteria for particular SLA (Second Language Acquisition)/FLT (Foreign Language Teaching) purposes, encoded in a standardized and homogeneous way and documented as to its origin.
There is no available digitalised learner corpus for Romanian, whilst there are now over 150 learner corpora from all around the world (see the list at https://uclouvain.be/en/research-institutes/ilc/cecl/learner-corpora-around-the-world.html). The main goal of the LECOR project is to build and exploit the first digitalized learner corpus for Romanian, available in open-access format.
The objectives of the LECOR project are: 1) to collect a rich raw learner corpus of Romanian (more than 4,000 samples), complying with relevant legal regulations and fulfilling current scientific requirements; 2) to automatically annotate with morpho-syntactical and syntactical labels the whole corpus and to manually annotate learners’ errors for 3,500 sentences; 3) to develop an interface that makes LECOR available to anyone and that allows diverse queries; 4) to carry out studies in learner corpus, FLT and SLA fields; 5) to develop our human resources experience and to increase the international visibility of Romanian research in this specific domain.
LECOR is designed thus to have the following characteristics: (a) it is a monolingual corpus; (b) it contains written (80%) and oral (20%) learners’ samples; (c) the sample collection is mainly controlled (i.e. it consists of dialogues, essays, etc., created in the classroom, as homework or during exams). The project team will, however, try also to gather learners’ productions in natural settings (Facebook comments, chat exchanges, authentic oral dialogues, etc.); (d) it can be used both as a synchronic/ cross-sectional corpus (it contains samples produced by different learners on the same or on different topics in the same period of time) and as a diachronic/ longitudinal corpus (as it contains the same learners’ productions throughout the entire academic year); (e) as for its breadth, it is mainly a general corpus, but we intend to collect also some B1-B2 samples of language for specific purposes; (f) it is automatically lemmatized and annotated at the morpho-syntactic and syntactic level and manually annotated by linguist specialists for learner morphological and syntactical errors.
Our corpus will be scalable and will have many possible end-uses in language teaching and in natural language processing. Learners, teachers and researchers interested in RFL/RSL will benefit from the outputs of the project and from the scientific events organized during the project. LECOR will be a general reference source for information (e.g. the frequency of a certain word, phrase or type of error, etc.), it will serve to test research hypotheses and to exemplify them, and it will help to provide accurate statistical analysis on Romanian as interlanguage. LECOR will be explored for analyses of both a quantitative (i.e. statistics) and a qualitative nature (i.e. the broad social and psychological context of language learning; the connections between variables etc.). LECOR will be used cross-sectionally and longitudinally.
The outputs undertaken by the project are: 1. a learner corpus for Romanian (LECOR) partially annotated and scalable, with a web interface that makes LECOR available to anybody and that allows diverse queries; 2. articles published in peer-reviewed journals and studies in various volumes (including a special volume discussing the common errors produced by learners of Romanian); 3. enhancing the professional skills of the team members (by participation in international conferences, in summer schools and research visits, etc.).
The project team has seven members (2 IT specialists and 5 linguists all seven of whom also teach RFL): Carmen Mîrzea Vasile (the project leader), Ana Maria Barbu, Elena Irimia, Mihaela Cristescu, Valentina Cojocaru, Cătălina Corbeanu, Monica Vasileanu.

Carmen Mîrzea Vasile is a PhD Lecturer in Romanian Linguistics at the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Letters, and a Researcher at the “Iorgu Iordan – Al. Rosetti” Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy. She is the author of two books on the Romanian adverb: Eterogenitatea adverbului românesc. Tipologie și descriere [The Heterogeneity of the Romanian Adverb. Typology and Description], 2012, and Adverbul românesc. Între continuitate latină, specific balcanic și evoluție internă [The Romanian Adverb. About Its Continuity from Latin, Its Balkan Specificity and Its Internal Evolution], 2013, and of many articles in peer reviewed journals. She is one of the co-authors of The Grammar of Romanian (Oxford University Press, 2013), Diachronic Variation in Romanian (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2015), Anthologies et corpus pan-romans (De Gruyter Mouton, 2015), The Syntax of Old Romanian (Oxford University Press, 2016), Adjective Adverb Interfaces in Romance (John Benjamins, 2017), Exploring Discourse Practices in Romanian (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2020), Derivational Networks Across Languages (De Gruyter Mouton, 2020) and of several volumes published at the Publishing House of the Romanian Academy and at University of Bucharest Publishing House. Carmen Mîrzea Vasile was a postdoctoral fellow on the programme “Valuing cultural identities within global processes” run by the The Romanian Academy (2011-2013, POSDRU/89/1.5/S/59758) and she was also a member of more than six other research projects. Her main interests are derivational morphology and its interfaces, the syntax and pragmatics of the adverb, and Romanian as a foreign/second language. Ana-Maria Barbu is a first degree senior researcher at the “Iorgu Iordan – Al. Rosetti” Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy and PhD supervisor at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Letters at the University of Bucharest. She graduated from the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (1985), and from the Department of Classical Languages (Latin and Ancient Greek) of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Bucharest (1995). Her professional activity for over 25 years has focused on research in the field of theoretical linguistics and computational linguistics (especially in corpus linguistics). These interests are reflected in her doctoral thesis The Syntax of Determiners. Linguistic Analysis and Computational Application (2005) and in numerous works (sole-authored books, chapters in monographs and articles, etc.). Ms. Ana-Maria Barbu participated in numerous projects on corpus linguistics (e.g. MULTEXT-East) and the computerization of linguistic resources (e.g. Wordnet, eDTLR, PALIROM, AFLR).
She has also focused on the construction of linguistic resources destined to Natural Language Processing. This has resulted in a series of works that have definite applicability in the learning of Romanian by foreigners. For example, she has produced an explicit dictionary of lemmas and inflectional forms of Romanian words (presented in the article “Romanian Lexical Data Bases: Inflected and Syllabic Forms Dictionaries”, in the Proceedings of LREC2008). Of note also is her book The Conjugation of Romanian verbs, at Coresi Publishing House (2005-2013 editions), and her book describing the valence structures (i.e. sets of mandatory and non-mandatory complements semantically governed by a verb) for a nucleus of 600 Romanian verbs, A Dictionary of Verbal Contexts, at University of Bucharest Publishing House (2017), accessible online (link la http://188.212.37.221:9000/).
As regards theoretical linguistics, she has written several works dedicated to morphology – particularly syntax interfaces revealed by analyzing the structures of two juxtaposed nouns, often based on corpus data: see “Restrictive apposition in Romance Languages: Syntactic Expansions of a Compound Pattern”, Word Structure 13.2 (2020 ); “A Data-Driven Analysis of the Structure Type ‘man-nature relationship’ in Romanian” in Noun Valency, SLCS 158, John Benjamins Publishing Company (2014); “Noun-noun constructions. Ms. Ana-Maria Barbu’s current scientific interests are mainly oriented towards the continuation of the study and description of verbal argument structures and the construction of computerized linguistic resources: the series inventory of attested new words and meanings in the online environment, the corpus of Romanian as a foreign language in the present project, Romanian grammar for foreign students in the MultiGram application and others.

Elena Irimia is a Senior Scientific Researcher III (www.racai.ro/~elena, https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=ro&user=JKhSYPMAAAAJ, https://www.brainmap.ro/irimia-elena) in the Natural Language Processing group of the “Mihai Drăgănescu” Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence, part of the Romanian Academy. She has a Bachelor in Mathematics (University of Bucharest, Faculty of Mathematics, Specialisation of Informatics, 1997-2001), an MA in Theoretical Linguistics (University of Bucharest, Faculty of Letters, 2002-2003) and a PhD in Computer Science (Romanian Academy) which researched the topic of Machine Translation. She pursued postdoctoral studies in informatics (grant-aided by the Romanian Academy) and has resided abroad in order to conduct research in Barcelona (Institute of Applied Linguistics of “Pompeu Fabra” University) and in Sofia (Department of Computational Linguistics, Institute for Bulgarian, Sofia, Bulgaria). She is the author/co-author of more than 40 scientific publications; over 400 citations on GS (on October 15, 2020, H-index 10, i10-index 12). Elena Irimia has participated in the development of different standardized annotated corpora for Romanian: a hand validated journalistic corpus (RoCo_News), a balanced corpus (ROMBAC) and a reference corpus (CoRoLa). As a post-doctoral researcher, she has developed a treebank (parsed corpus) nucleus for Romanian and later participated in the development of a reference treebank for Romanian. She has expertise in: corpora collection; corpora annotation, both manually and automatically; metadata creation. Dr. Mihaela Cristescu is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Romanian Studies, Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest, where she teaches Romanian as a Foreign Language and a seminar in General Linguistics (since 2016). She published her PhD thesis, entitled Negație și concordanță negativă în româna actuală. O evaluare critică [Negation and Negative Concord in contemporary Romanian. A critical analysis], in 2017, at the University of Bucharest Publishing House. She worked for 6 years as a Linguist Researcher, in the field of Natural Language Processing Natural, in the Research & Development Department of Softwin SRL, where she was part of the project entitled “Romanian Language Phonetic Analysis: study and applications” (2014-2017). Mihaela is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Interdisciplinary School of Doctoral Studies (ISDS), University of Bucharest and an entrepreneurial postdoctoral researcher, on the project entitled “Entrepreneurial Education and Professional Counseling for Social and Human Sciences PhD and Postdoctoral Researchers to ensure knowledge transfer from the field of Social Sciences and Humanities to the Labor Market”, co-financed from European Social Fund through Human Capital Programme (ATRiUM) POCU/380/6/13/123343, with the research project Expresia negației în dialectele sud-dunărene ale limbii române [Negation patterns across the South-Danube dialects of the Romanian language]. Mihaela has also participated, as an annotator, in PARSEME shared task on automatic detection of verbal multiword expressions (VMWEs), in 2017 and 2018. Within this COST Action, she participated in the Joint Workshop on Multiword Expressions and WordNet (VMWE-WN), at The 57th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), 2019, Florence, Italy with the presentation entitled “The Romanian Corpus Annotated with Verbal Multiword Expressions” (co-author). Her current main research interests are: Formal and Lexical Semantics, Corpus Linguistics, Dialectology, Natural Language Processing, Romanian as a Foreign Language, eLearning.

Valentina COJOCARU is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Romanian Studies, Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest where she teaches the Romanian language to foreign students. She is also a Researcher at the Lexicography and Etymology Department within “Iorgu Iordan – Al. Rosetti” Linguistic Institute of Romanian Academy. There, she is involved in several projects such as the writing of the Dictionary-Thesaurus for the Romanian Language, The Dictionary of the Romanian Language, and the volume, Word formation in the Romanian language: derivation with nominal suffixes. She obtained a doctorate degree in Linguistics in 2016 with a study on Discourse Markers (Discourse Markers in Spoken Romanian in Moldova: Pragmatic and Sociolinguistic Approaches). She is particularly interested in the field of discourse markers analysis such as the polyfunctionality of discourse marks, the influence of bilingualism on the class of discourse markers, grammaticalization and pragmaticalization, etc., as well as studying discourse markers acquisition in learning Romanian as a foreign language. At the same time, she took part in numerous conferences and workshops held in Romania and abroad (Cambridge, Heidelberg, Utrecht, Bergamo), in research internships within prestigious universities (Leiden, Poznan, Utrecht), and has participated in courses and summer schools (EGG Summer School, Debrecen). These teaching and research activities are complemented by her involvement in the organization of the Romanian Linguistics Olympiad, together with colleagues from the Linguistic Institute of the Romanian Academy and the Faculty of Letters of University of Bucharest, institutions that have offered constant support in the development of this competition since 2013.

Dr. Cătălina-Ramona Corbeanu is a researcher at the Romanian Academy’s “Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti” Institute of Linguistics and a Junior Lecturer at the Centre for Romanian Studies, Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest. She received her PhD from the Romanian Academy’s Doctoral Programme (2017) with a thesis entitled The Order of the Subject in Old Romanian and she is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Interdisciplinary School of Doctoral Studies (ISDS), University of Bucharest, her topic being Traces of Non-Configurational Syntax in Romanian. She is the principal investigator in a grant awarded by Romanian Academy, called The Cultural Periodicals Prohibited by the Communist Censorship of the Library of the Romanian Academy (2019-2021), as well as a fresh postdoctoral researcher as part of a young team dealing with Istro-Romanians and Istro-Romanian. Legacy and Heritage (2020-2022), sponsored by UEFISCDI. She has taught Romanian as a second language since 2013 and has experience with students coming from various countries and with different cultural backgrounds. She has given talks to national and international conferences and has published articles on the syntax of old Romanian and also on the acquisition of Romanian as a second language (“Difficulties Concerning Argument Structure in the Verb Phrase in the Process of Learning Romanian as a Foreign Language”, with Roxana Dincă, 2019; “Romanian as a Foreign Language. Tests for Levels A1-B2”, with Ionuț Geană, 2019; “Mistakes in the Use of the Indirect Object in the Dative in the Written Communications of Foreign Students”, with Monica Vasileanu, 2020). Her current main research interests are: Romanian as a second language, the syntax of old Romanian and of modern Romanian, the syntax of Istro-Romanian, lexicology, lexicography and Romanian derivational morphology.

Monica Vasileanu is a researcher III at the “Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti” Institute of Linguistics (Romanian Academy) and an assistant lecturer at the University of Bucharest. With a BA in Romanian and Latin and an MA in Linguistics, she was awarded a PhD (2012) by the University of Bucharest for her paper on the beginnings of Romanian academic writing. Dr. Vasileanu continued her research on old Romanian language and literature with her postdoc (2014-2015). Later on, she participated in several national and international grant-aided research projects (The phonetic analysis of Romanian, 2014-2017; A multidisciplinary approach to language contact and language change in present-day Romanian, 2015-2017; Attitudes and emotions across languages. The case of Polish and Romanian, 2016-2018). In 2020 she was awarded the grant Synchronic and diachronic perspectives on lexical blending: from the Latin inherited lexicon to the present-day English influence by UEFISCDI.
Dr. Vasileanu has contributed to reference works published by the Romanian Academy, such as The Dictionary of Romanian and The Etymological Dictionary of Romanian. She has published a monograph based on her PhD paper, Începuturile scrisului academic în limba română (2019) and around 30 articles and book chapters. Her main research topic is the evolution of Romanian vocabulary, studied from various approaches, the most recent being the psycholinguistic one.
Dr. Vasileanu has been teaching Romanian as a foreign language since 2011, at various levels (A1-B2), at the University of Bucharest. She is the author of a short course for beginners, to be used in the summer schools (in press). She has also delivered several presentations at international conferences and published two articles on RFL.
