Between June 11–13, a delegation from the University of Bucharest took part in the 2025 edition of CIVIS DAYS, hosted by Sapienza University of Rome. This year’s theme, “Inclusion and Diversity in Higher Education,” highlighted the CIVIS Alliance’s ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse academic space.
The event brought together students, faculty, administrative staff from the 11 member universities, policymakers, innovators, and local authorities from across Europe. CIVIS DAYS 2025 provided a dynamic forum for dialogue and collaboration, aimed at strengthening the CIVIS network through innovative solutions to the societal challenges the alliance faces.
At the opening of the event, Professor Romiță Iucu, PhD, Chair of the University of Bucharest’s Council for Strategic Analysis and Orientation (COAS) and coordinator of the European Degree Subgroup within FOREU4ALL, delivered a keynote lecture titled “From Inclusivity to… Transclusivity: The Road from Inclusive Universities to Transformative European Alliances.” Professor Marian Preda, PhD, Rector of the University of Bucharest, also took part in a roundtable discussion alongside Mattia Bellotti, Secretary General of the EUTOPIA Alliance.
“CIVIS is to the University of Bucharest what the European Union is to Romania,” noted Professor Marian Preda. “Through CIVIS, we are part of a European network of universities, a kind of meta-university. Our students gain access to education at ten other major European universities, where they can take part in academic activities for a semester or shorter periods, and return with both experiences and transferable credits. Our researchers collaborate on joint projects and share research infrastructure, an enormous advantage, since no single European university has a budget comparable to those of major institutions in the U.S. or China. But together, we can be more competitive.”
During the event hosted by Sapienza University, UB delegates presented a selection of the CIVIS projects they had been involved in over the past year. Among these, the University of Bucharest’s “Careers” project was awarded a prize at the CIVIS DAYS 2025 Gala on Thursday, June 12.
The three-day event featured a wide range of workshops, lectures, working meetings, and open sessions focused on key topics in European higher education:
Empowering student leadership: Insights from the CIVIS Student Council
Managing Polycrisis Situation – Simulation game
Sharing the CIVIS3I Experience
Museum University Forum
Seed funding projects: some findings on inclusivity
Libraries & inclusion: services, spaces, resources for all
Plenary: Learning experience in Service Learning at institutional and national levels
At the closing session, Rector Marian Preda emphasized a third key dimension of the CIVIS Alliance: civic engagement, societal problem-solving, and social responsibility: “We develop projects for students and local communities based on European values, which, in times of crisis, such as when authoritarian parties or leaders come to power, serve as strong anchors for preserving democracy, university autonomy, and humanistic values.”
