On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the University of Bucharest, in partnership with the Embassy of France in Romania and the Embassy of Germany in Romania, is hosting a conference to mark Franco-German Day and the anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, signed on the same day in 1963. The event will take place in the „Ioan Mihăilescu” Amphitheatre at the Rectorate of the University of Bucharest (90 Panduri Street, Sector 5, first floor) from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, with English as the language of communication.
The conference will be attended by Professor Marian Preda, PhD, Rector of the University of Bucharest, alongside H.E. Mr. Nicolas Warnery, Ambassador of the French Republic to Romania, and H.E. Dr. Peer Gebauer, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Romania.
The event will be moderated by Sorin Costreie, PhD, President of Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe – UNICA, CIVIS Alliance coordinator at the University of Bucharest, and faculty member at the Faculty of Philosophy, together with Romiță Iucu, PhD, President of the University’s Board of Trustees, UB representative in the Steering Committee and CIVS Educational Council, and faculty member at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences.
Members of the University’s academic community, students, faculty, and researchers, are invited to engage in an interactive discussion with the guests. Topics will focus on the importance of Franco-German collaboration in shaping Europe, the challenges of European integration in today’s geopolitical context, and the role of diplomats, particularly ambassadors, in addressing the current political climate in Romania.
This conference celebrates a significant milestone in European history: the signing of the Élysée Treaty on January 22, 1963, by French President Charles de Gaulle and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. This agreement symbolized Franco-German reconciliation, paved the way for unprecedented cooperation between the two nations, and was a key step in building Europe, laying the foundation for a strong political, economic, and cultural union.
The event is organized in partnership with the French Institute of Romania (Institut français de Roumanie à Bucarest) and the „Goethe” Institute in Romania (Goethe-Institut Romania).
