Between July 22 – August 4, 2019, the University of Bucharest organized the 59th edition of the Summer Courses of Romanian Language, Culture and Civilization. This summer school is the oldest initiative of a Romanian university to promote the Romanian language and culture in the world. This year’s edition was attended by 30 students from 14 countries: United States, Canada, Brazil, Korea, Turkey, Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia and Italy. Young people participated to intensive Romanian language courses, conceived in a communicative perspective, at workshops and conferences on topics regarding Romanian culture and civilization, cultural events, as well as visit several museums. All these contributed to the enrichment of Romanian language knowledge and to the familiarization of the participants with important aspects of Romanian civilization. The official opening of the Summer Courses took place on Monday, July 22, starting at 5:00 pm in the Reading Room of the Faculty of Letters (Edgar Quinet Street, No. 5-7). At the opening, words of welcome were addressed by PhD prof. Mircea Dumitru (Rector of the University of Bucharest), PhD prof. Marian Preda (Senate President of the University of Bucharest), Assoc. Prof. Sorin Costreie (Vicerector of the University of Bucharest), PhD prof. Emil Ionescu (Dean of the Faculty of Letters), PhD prof. Oana Chelaru-Murăruș (Honorific Director of Summer Courses) and Assoc. Prof. Luciana-Alexandra Ghica (President of the Alumni Association of the University of Bucharest). The opening ceremony was moderated by Asist prof. Alexandru Nicolae (Director of Summer Courses) and Asist prof. Ionuț Geană (Executive Director of Summer Courses). Hosted for the tenth year consecutive by the UB Faculty of Letters, the courses are the expression of nearly 60 years of tradition in promoting the Romanian language, culture and civilization. For over half a century, the Summer Courses of the University of Bucharest have earned a well-deserved prestige through the participation of numerous university teachers from the country and abroad, as well as of distinguished academics, cultural people, artists. The annual events date from the 1960s, when the renowned linguist Alexandru Rosetti launched this initiative this approach in Sinaia, continued for a long time by Professor Boris Cazacu.
