The University of Bucharest congratulates the students and their professors, members of the national Olympic teams who achieved outstanding results at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2023) in Switzerland: one gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
The Romanian team was coordinated by prof. Marius Andruh, PhD, and assoc. prof. Matache Mihaela, PhD, teaching staff at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest.
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2023) held from July 16 to 25, 2023, brought together 350 students from 89 countries. According to the program of the event, the teams had the opportunity to discover the city of Zürich, the ETH Zürich Polytechnic University, and also participate in a chemistry fair and a career debate. The observer professor of the Romanian team was Daniela Elisabeta Bogdan, teaching staff at the “Saint Sava” National College in Bucharest.
The laureates of the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2023) are:
Vlad Gabriel Ristache, 12th grade, pupil at the “Tudor Vianu” National College of Informatics in Bucharest, won a gold medal.
Vlad Diaconescu, 12th grade, won a silver medal. He is a pupil at the “Tudor Vianu” National College of Informatics in Bucharest.
Luca Mihai Rascarachi, 11th grade, who obtained a silver medal, is a pupil at the International Informatics High School in Bucharest.
David Alexandru Sindreștean, 11th grade, pupil at the “Dragoș Vodă” National College in Sighetu Marmații, obtained a bronze medal.
“It was not an easy contest. All participants have behind them the pandemic period in which the training was different than before the pandemic. We also felt it at the national level and in a way here too. Last year the performance was better, but I didn’t have a practice test last year, so I can’t compare. The weightage is as follows: 60% theory test and 40% practical test, which means quite a lot. We are satisfied because in a short time we managed to rebuild the Olympic team. With other people, but we managed to re-enter in good conditions for the Olympics”, said prof. Marius Andruh, PhD.
“They were trained in organic chemistry by professors Matache Mihaela and Codruța Popescu from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest and in analytical chemistry by professor Ion Ion from the Polytechnic University. It is a larger team of academics who train them in a short time, we cannot prepare them more, according to the regulations. It’s a committed team”, he continued.
