Wednesday, June 8, 2022, prof. emeritus Gabriela Pană Dindelegan, PhD, professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest and researcher at the Institute of Linguistics „Iorgu Iordan – Al. Rosetti” was elected full member of the Romanian Academy, a central institution of the Romanian state, the highest forum for scientific and cultural recognition in Romania.
With over 50 years of experience in the Romanian Language Department, head of the Grammar Department within the “Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti” Institute of Linguistics in Bucharest, prof. Gabriela Pană Dindelegan is one of the most well-known Romanian linguists at national and European level.
With a prolific publishing activity, the linguist is the main author and main reviewer of the “Academic Grammar of the Romanian Language” (Romanian Academy Publishing House, 2005/2008), as well as the author and coordinator of the “Basic Grammar of the Romanian Language” (Univers Enciclopedic Gold Publishing House, 2010/2016), as well as author and co-editor of the volume “Studies on the history of the Romanian language. The morphosyntax of the literary language in the 19th and 20th centuries” (Romanian Academy Publishing House, 2015).
She has also written and coordinated five books published at prestigious UK publishers: The Grammar of Romanian (Oxford University Press, 2013), Diachronic Variation in Romanian (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2015), The Syntax of Old Romanian (Oxford University Press, 2016), Romance Syntax Comparative and diachronic perspectives (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2018) and is co-author of The Oxford History of Romanian Morphology(Oxford University Press, 2021). In addition to the teaching activity and management responsibilities within the Faculty of Letters of UB, prof. Gabriela Pană Dindelegan stood out in June 2017-September 2017 as interim director of the Institute of Linguistics “Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti”, as well as a member of the Coordinating Council of the Institute of Romanian Language – ILR (2009-2010) and in the Commission (MEC) for the award of university degrees (2004-2010). Between 1992 and 1993, she taught Romanian as a lecturer in France.
She has a degree in philology (1964), a field in which she also obtained a PhD with the research paper “Transformational syntax of the verbal group in Romanian” (1970), coordinated by acad. Al. Rosetti. In 1974, with the publication of her doctoral thesis, awarded with the Prize of the Romanian Academy “Timotei Cipariu”, the author lays the foundations of modern Romanian grammar of generative orientation.
Her research focuses on the following topics: Romanian language grammar (morphology, syntax, morphosyntax); contrastive linguistic typology and grammar; linguistic dynamics; language theory and research methods; historical syntax; historical morphology and linguistic terminology.
Since 2004, prof. Gabriela Pană Dindelegan is a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, and in 2009 she was awarded the National Order “For Merit” (Knight).
In 2017, prof. Gabriela Pană Dindelegan won, in the first edition of the UB Senate Awards, the distinction for “professor emeritus of the year” in the field of Humanities. The interview given by the laureate can be consulted here.
In the same year, at the age of 75, the volume “Syntax as a way of being” was published in the series “Personalities of the University of Bucharest. Tribute to Gabriela Pană Dindelegan”, to which dozens of prestigious linguists from the country and abroad contributed, including UB professors.
