The university of Bucharest congratulates its pupils and professors, members of the national team that obtained remarkable results at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2024) in Saudi Arabia and brought home three silver medals and one bronze medal.
The results of the Romanian pupils as, to an equal measure, owned to other own efforts and the efforts of the professors who discovered them and nourished they passion for chemistry: professors Lina Chiru (International Computer Science Theoretical Highschool in Bucharest), Claudia Anghel (Tudor Vianu National College in Bucharest) and Valeria Teotoi (Tudor Vladimirescu National College in Târgu Jiu).
The Olympic lot that participated to the 2024 International Chemstry Olympiad was prepared, under the coordination of professor and academician Marius Andruh, by a team of teaching staff of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest (associate professors Mihaela Matache and Bogdan Jurca, lecturer Cristina Tăbleț, associate professor Mirela Călinescu, lecturer Codruța Popescu), of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca (professor Ion Grosu, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, academician Cristian Silvestru, associate professor Niculina Hădade, and lecturers Lucian Pop and Elena Bogdan), of the POLITEHNICA National University of Science and Technology (professors Ion Ion and Mircea Teodorescu), as well as from the West University in Timișoara (associate professor Vlad Chiriac).
Romania’s delegation to the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad m benefited from the support of the chief of the diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia, dr. Oana Ghica, who participated next to the pupils and professors to the opening and closing ceremonies and significantly facilitated a better understanding of the Arab cultural space. Dr. Oana Ghica is an alumna of the University of Bucharest herself, having graduated the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Romanian-Arabic section.
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2024) took place between July 21st – 30th 2024 and brought together 350 students from 85 countries. According to the program of the event, besides participating in the two written competition probes – practical and theoretical – the Olympic teams had the chance to take part in various activities created for this event.
The winners of the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2024) are:
Rascarachi Luca Mihai – silver medal (International Computer Science Theoretical Highschool in Bucharest )
Taerel Radu Nicolae – silver medal ( Tudor Vladimirescu National College in Târgu Jiu)
Ciobanu Andrei – silver medal (Tudor Vianu National College in Bucharest)

Romania’ Olympic Lot, also on the podium of the 2023 edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad
At the 2023 edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad, which took place in Switzerland, Romania’s Olympic lot obtained remarkable results, bringing home a gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal.
Then, pupils Vlad Gabriel Ristache, Vlad Diaconescu, Luca Mihai Rascarachi and David Alexandru Sindreștean, also coordinated by professor Marius Andruh and associate professor Matache Mihaela, teaching staff at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest, positioned Romania on the podium.
It wasn’t an easy Olympiad. All the participants carry the burden of the pandemic when preparation was different than before the pandemic. We felt it also at the national stage and, in some sense, here as well. Last year, performance was better, but last year we didn’t have the practical challenge, so there is no comparison. The average is as follows: 60% for the theoretical test and 40% for the practical test, which means quite a lot. We are satisfied because in a short time we managed to rebuild the Olympic team. With other people, but we managed to get back into Olympiad form, said, at the closing of the 55th IChO edition, professor Marius Andruh.
