On the occasion of Romania’s National Day, Professor Cătălina Ulrich Hygum, PhD, a faculty member at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Bucharest was awarded the „Merit of Education” Order in the rank of Knight by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.
The distinction was presented to her on Thursday, December 12, 2024, by the Minister of Education, Ligia Deca, during a ceremony held at the Central University Library in Bucharest.
As stated in the decoration decree, the distinction was awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development of education, honouring professors who, over time, have distinguished themselves in their dedication to the education system and for fostering charitable and volunteer efforts aimed at supporting school and community values.

Cătălina Ulrich Hygum is a Professor at the Department of Educational Sciences within the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Bucharest. She teaches classes in Sociology of Education, Civic and Social Education, Socio-Cultural Perspectives in Early Childhood Education, Collaborative Learning, and Evaluative Research.
Within the Educational Testing Laboratory team at the University of Bucharest, she coordinates the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) conducted in Romania in 2022 and 2027. As an expert for the Council of Europe, she contributes to the creation of the European Citizenship Framework.
Her research interests focus on the sociology of childhood, analysis of relations and interactions between adults and children (through videographic and ethnographic approaches) and education for democratic citizenship. She has carried out evaluative studies for CEDEFOP, SLO, INTRAC, UNICEF, OSI, the World Bank, IOM, the Wolfensohn Institute, the Bernard Van Leer Foundation, ISSA, UNESCO, and the IOM. Following her experience as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2011-2012), she promotes inquiry-based learning through interdisciplinary projects.
