Professor Marian Preda, PhD, was re-elected Rector of the University of Bucharest (UB) for the 2023 – 2028 mandate, with 633 votes, representing 67,70% of the total number of votes registered for the elections organized Wednesday, December 6th 2023.
1.363 members of the academic community of the University of Bucharest had the right to vote at the elections, among which 1.226 represent teaching staff and researchers employed with indefinite working contracts, and 137 are student members of the University Senate and Faculties’ Councils.
Two candidates ran for this position: professor Marian Preda, PhD, and professor Cristian Preda PhD, the latter obtaining 233 votes, representing 24,92% of the total number of votes registered. In addition, during the elections for the position of UB Rector for the 2023 – 2028 mandate, there were 69 invalid votes, representing 7,38% of the total number of votes registered.
The elections for the position of Rector of the University of Bucharest will be validated during the UB Senate meeting that will take place on December 13th 2023, which will be followed, according to the legislation in force, by the official confirmation and appointment of professor Marian Preda as Rector, by Order of the Minister of Education.
University professor and sociologist, Marian Preda, PhD, has been an active UB academic member since 1990. He was part of the administration board of the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work of the University of Bucharest between 2000-2015, first as Vice-Dean (2000 – 2008), then as Dean (2008 – 2015). He was the President of the Senate of the University of Bucharest during the 2015 – 2019 mandate and has been the Rector of the University of Bucharest for the last four years. Among other academic activities, Professor Marian Preda teaches, since 1994, Strategic management, Organizational Behavior, Social Policies and The Sociology of Time.
Professor Marian Preda is part of the first series of sociology students after the Revolution in 1989, has a master’s degree in Social policies at the University of Bucharest (2005), and is an alumnus of Tiffin University in USA, where he graduated with a second master in Business Administration (2006).
He has also participated in several training stages abroad, at “Anglia Ruskin University” in Cambridge and “George Washington University” in Washington, with a Fulbright scholarship.
In the last 30 years, in parallel to the academic profession, Marian Preda has been a manager, consultant or expert in a great number of projects financed by national or international organizations, and has collaborated with institutions such as ONU – particularly UNICEF and UNDP -, World Bank, Bernard Brunhes International (BBI) and The European Commission.
In addition, professor Marian Preda was President of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis of Social and Demographic Risks (2009 – 2010), member of the National Commission for Population (2007 – 2009, 2010 – 2012), President of the Sociologists’ Society in Romania (2010 – 2012), and the President of the National Statistical Council of the National Institute of Statistics (2016 – 2018, 2018 – 2020).
