Being unique in our country, the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics has its origins in three faculties with a geological and geophysics profile, organized after the Education Reform of 1948. Today, it keeps the traditions of the Romanian geology going, with a high level of scientific and didactic approach, based on permanent updating and modernization.
The current organization of the faculty dates back from 1990 and is characterized through continuous dynamics, offering its graduates opportunities for a professional career both in the industry and in the scientific and academic domains,.
The academic offer of the faculty contains three Bachelor’s degree programmes, five Master’s programmes and one Ph.D. programme in modern fields of study, of high interest for the global labour market and for the advanced scientific research: Geologic Engineering, Geology and Geophysics.
The scientific research activity is very intense and it takes place within nine centres, as it is focused on fundamental, applied problems of modern geosciences. They carry out research contracts with important institutions and organizations such as UEFISCDI, but also with specialized businesses such as PROSPECȚIUNI S.A., OMV-PETROM, GEOECOMAR, the “Sabba Ştefănescu” Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy and many others, projects which engage both professors and researchers, as well as numerous students.
Geology, a fundamental domain in the large field of Natural Sciences, is inseparably tied to the applied part of collection specific samples and data on the field, which is later on handled, modelled and interpreted for the clarification of crucial aspects for the evolution of Earth, for the accumulation of useful mineral substances, both solid and fluid, but also for the protection of the environment. Therefore, the specialized geological practice represents an essential component in the thorough preparation of the students of the faculty.
The students perform terrain practice in all areas of interest when it comes to geology, geological engineering and geophysics in Romania and sometimes in the neighbouring countries.
The specialized practice within the field of geology are held during the final years in terrain campaigns which are organized by the Department of Geophysics in cooperation with profile-specific companies such as PROSPECȚIUNI S.A. and WEATHERFORD International Eastern Europe. These practice sessions aim to teach the students methods and methodologies to acquire, handle and interpret general geophysical data, including the industrial-type geophysical methods. From all professional students’ associations, the Bucharest Student Chapter (BSC) comes forth as being a students’ group with a scientific profile, which is affiliated to the Faculty, having a history of 12 years of activity. The professors and a large number of students are active within research programmes held along with universities and research institutes from countries which are advanced in the field of geosciences, such as Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Great Britain, the USA, Italy, Ukraine, Hungary etc.
The graduates of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics can become geologist engineers, geophysicists, professors and researches in the academic field, researchers within the research institutes, researchers in mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry, palaeontology, specialists in geologic stations, environment inspectors, hydrogeology experts, analysts in resource and global economy issues, specialists in the management of natural hazards, museum specialists, expert in precious stones etc.
