A team of four students from the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics of the University of Bucharest participated on Thursday, March 23, 2023, in the international competition of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the Imperial Barell Award (IBA).
In the competition, the team of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics obtained the third place in the European Semifinal.
The students were guided by lect. Ioan Muntean, PhD, and coordinated by Dorina Țambrea, PhD, teaching staff at the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics.
The four students are enrolled in the master’s programs Assessment of Sedimentary Basins and Mineral Resources and Applied Geophysics, and in the undergraduate program Geological Engineering (Geological Engineering of Resources optional group).
The IBA competition is dedicated to students in the field of Geosciences and involves the assessment for 8 weeks of the hydrocarbon potential of a sedimentation basin following the integrated analysis and interpretation of a set of geological and geophysical data. After these 8 weeks, teams from all participating universities meet online and present their projects.
The competition gives students the opportunity to use their knowledge gained over the years of study and the opportunity to experience the potential of creativity, science, technology and efficiency regarding the future of exploration for new energy resources.
