During the 22nd-28th of October, the Romanian Geology Society organizes, for the first time on national level, The Geology Week event, in partnership with the University of Bucharest, the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, the „Țara Hațegului” International Geopark – UNESCO International Geopark, the Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology – GeoEcoMar Bucharest, the Oil and Gas University of Ploiești, the „Babeş-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, the „Victor Gorduza” Mineralogy Museum of Baia Mare, the „Al. I. Cuza” University of Iaşi, the Geomedia Association, the Văcărești Natural Park and Propark- Foundation for Protected Areas.
The event, dedicated to the public at large, takes place into five counties in the country (Hunedoara, Prahova, Cluj, Maramureş, Iaşi) and the Municipality of Bucharest. The activities, organized by the Romanian Geological Society subsidiaries from Bucharest, Ploieşti, Cluj-Napoca, Baia Mare and Iaşi university centres together with the partners, are different and urge to discovery. These include walks and field trips, guided tour visits to museums and visiting areas of ecologic interests, interactive workshops on themes regarding minerals and fossils, drawing contests, geoproduct fairs, movie presentations with geological theme, geology lessons within an innovative framework, round tables, conferences and debates.
In Bucharest, the events will take place into Văcărești Natural Park, in The Ark event space and Politehnica underground station. Guided tour visits and a workshop dedicated to geoproducts, in the context of creative traditions, will be organized in Hunedoara County at the Geopark Houses. In Baia Mare, the majority of activities will be organized at the headquarters of the „Victor Gorduza” Mineralogy Country Museum, with a geological trip at the Chiuzbaia Fossil Reserve. In Cluj-Napoca, activities are scheduled at the Mineralogy Museum and Palaeontology Museum of the „Babeș-Bolyai” University Department of Geology. In Ploieşti, activities will take place at the Oil and Gas University of Ploiești and in Iaşi, at the Geology Department of the Faculty of Geology and Geography.
The Geology Week is an annual celebration of geology. According to the American Institute of Geology, the organizer of this event for 20 years, the main objectives of the Geology Week are the involvement of pupils in the discovery of earth sciences, encouraging the protection of the planet though understanding global ecosystem as well as motivating geology specialists to share their knowledge. On global level, the event became a traditional one in countries such as the United States of America, Great Britain and Australia.
