The University of Bucharest (UB) is among the universities with the highest involvement in sustainable development activities, according to the 2024 edition of Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, one of the most renowned rankings in the international academic space.
The University of Bucharest ranks in the top 101-200 universities in the world, out of 1.963 institutions included in the ranking which has reached its sixth edition this year.
At national level, among the 19 universities included in the ranking, the University of Bucharest is positioned on top of the list, followed the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, both among the 401-600 universities at international level.
The criteria used to evaluate higher education institutions present in this ranking are based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, included in the 2030 Agenda. The classification methodology uses, for each institution, measurements for the best three positioned SDGs, to which SDG 17 – Partnerships for accomplishing the objectives – is added.
For this year’s edition, the University of Bucharest has reported 9 of the 17 SDGs. For 8 of the 9 goals reported, the University of Bucharest ranks first at national level. The goals mentioned are: SDG 1 – No poverty, SDG 4 – Quality education, SDG 5 – Gender Equality, SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth, SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities, SDG 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions. To these, SDG 17 is added – Partnerships for the goals, where the results of universities in Romania, placed in alphabetic order, position the University of Bucharest and Academy of Economic Studies on the top of the list at national level, and in the 201-300 range at international level.
At international level, UB is on the 13th place out of 1.086 institutions for SDG 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions, on the 50th place out of 1.681 institutions for SDG 4 – Quality education, ranks 38th among 1.361 institutions for SDG 5 – Gender equality and on the 65th position out of 1.026 institutions for SDG 11- Sustainable cities and communities.
In addition, in what concerns SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth, the University of Bucharest ranks 81st out of 1.149 institutions, while SDG 1– No poverty positions UB in the 101 – 200 range, out of a total of 1.903 institutions reporting their activities for this objective.
Not lastly, the University of Bucharest is among the 201-300 top institutions out of 2.031 for SDG 17 – Partnerships for the goals, in the 301-400 range out of 1.108 institutions for SDG 10 – Reduced inequalities, while the result for SDG 3 – Good health and well-being positions UB in the 401-600 range out of 1.498 institutions.
These results confirm the strong and efficient commitment of the University of Bucharest towards the sustainable development goals. Having a place in the international raking is, once again, proof that UB, through its values and sustainable activities, supports quality education in an inclusive, durable and egalitarian environment.
