Bucharest has managed to integrate in the European economic landscape, reaching levels of prosperity comparable to other capitals in Central and West Europe. This is highlighted in the latest Eurostat data, which position the Bucharest-Ilfov area on the 8th place in the top 242 NUTS 2* regions of the European Union, surpassing other notable European capitals such as Vienna, which ranks 24, and Berlin, ranking 144. Thus, the average income in Bucharest is 25% higher than the national average.
The performance of Bucharest is also sustained by the University of Bucharest, which, year by year, prepares the most well-paid employees in Romania: 17.692 lei is the average income obtained by the graduates of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Bucharest. Thus, UB is the first comprehensive higher education institution in Romania, considering the employment results of its graduates and their income.
For that matter, according to the most recent data offered by the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2025, the University of Bucharest is the first university in Romania concerning Employment Outcomes and Employer Reputation. Thus, for the indicator which targets Employment Outcomes, the University of Bucharest is positioned in the first 235 universities in the world, out of the 1.503 institutions included in the ranking this year, while for the indicator targeting Employer Reputation, the University of Bucharest ranks #462 at international level.
Computer Science, Law, Psychology and Social Sciences, among the fields which provide the highest incomes for UB graduates
According to the data correlated between REVISAL and RMU that exist in the monitoring system for the employability of higher education graduates (https://angajabilitate.uefiscdi.ro), based on the National Questionnaire referring to Employment Outcomes of university graduates (CNAAIS), the University of Bucharest has the best paid graduates out of all comprehensive universities, with an average salary of approximately 5.600 lei – more specific, 5.595,5 lei, 5 years after graduation. The University of Bucharest ranks first in this chart, followed by the West University of Timișoara and Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. If, at the level of all study fields, the average income obtained by UB graduates is approximately 5,600 lei, the graduates of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science have an average income of 17.692 lei. The highest salary registered in the National Questionnaire referring to Employment Outcomes of University Graduates by graduates of the UB Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science is 33.171 lei.
In what concerns UB Faculty of Law graduates, the average salary they receive and declare in the National Questionnaire referring to Employment Outcomes of University Graduates rises to 7.400 lei, while the maximum salary tops 17.808 lei.
Also, the graduates of the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Bucharest receive, according to the data collected by UEFISCDI, average salaries of approximately 5.500 – 6.000 lei: for the field of Psychology, the average income is 5.958 lei and the maximum income is 14.529, while for the field of Education Sciences, the average salary is 5.667, reaching a maximum of 10.202 lei.
* NUTS 2 is a hierarchical system developed by the European Union for regional policies (the name comes from – “Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics” and represents a European standard implemented in 2003).
