In September 2024, the University of Bucharest organized a training session for using assistive equipment within the Innovative Pedagogies Laboratories, which reunited 20 teaching staff, as part of the project Digital Ecosystem for Sustainable Learning at the University of Bucharest – #EDIS-UB.
During the training session, the organizers presented the functions of the assistive equipment, highlighting the way students can use these devices to reduce the barriers imposed by special educational needs. From printing documents with the help of the Braille printer, to creating tactile images through heating, to accessing digital information, introducing text and communicating via e-mail, using portable Braille displays and tablets adapted for people with vision impairments, all these instruments offer students autonomy and equal access to education.
The University of Bucharest is firmly engaged towards ensuring equal access and equity in education for students with special educational needs. We are systematically investing in technology and people to ensure a learning ecosystem which supports everyone’s success, said professor Marian Preda, PhD, Rector of the University of Bucharest.
The session was coordinated by lecturer Anișoara Dumitrache, PhD, teaching staff at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Bucharest and Innovative Pedagogies Laboratories responsible, and the training was presented by PhD Iulian Lesneanu.
The Innovative Pedagogies Laboratories represent a structure comprising 5 innovation centers in education, a hub dedicated to innovative ideas and educational practices. The 5 centers are distributed at the level of the University of Bucharest, based on the principle of covering fundamental study fields but also the proximity of headquarters, so that each faculty can benefit from the resources available here.
Each lab has equipment for supporting teaching activities dedicated to the integration of technology in education, but also to familiarizing teaching staff and students – future professors – with the digital technologies used in education and training. Assistive equipment, part of the endowment of laboratories, is accessible to all members of the academic community, supporting the inclusion of students with special educational needs and offering equal changes to education for all students.
The general coordination of the EDIS program is ensured by professor Lucian Ciolan, PhD, vice-rector for Development Programs and Lifelong Learning of the University of Bucharest, while associate professor Cosmin Olteanu, PhD, teaching staff at the Faculty of Business and Administration, is manager of the project .
