The University of Bucharest launches Tuesday, July 16th 2024, starting 10 AM, the events that mark the celebration of 160 years since its founding with an official ceremony hosted by the National Opera in Bucharest.
Among the people who have confirmed their presence we mention the Minister of Education in Romania, Ligia Deca, the Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitalization in Romania, Bogdan-Gruia Ivan, as well the Rectors of the University of Bucharest from the post-communist period, professor Emil Constantinescu, professor Ioan Pânzaru, professor and academician Mircea Dumitru and professor Romiță Iucu.
Besides the official speeches, the program of the official ceremony include several retrospective moments of the 160 years of existence of UB, presentations regarding the evolution of our students, poetry recitals, as well as the launch of the stamp edition UB 160. In addition, as part of the central event, the University of Bucharest has prepared participants guided tours in places of memory in Bucharest, guided visits at the Museum of the University of Bucharest and the Botanical Museum, as well as an official reception at the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden of the University of Bucharest.
The events will continue Wednesday, July 17th 2024, starting 1.30 PM, with the conference The University of Bucharest – 160 – catalyst of the modernization of Romania, hosted by the University House. The conference, reuniting specialists from various fields to discuss and analyze the evolution of Romanian higher education, aims to generate new analytic and methodological approaches regarding the history of education, with an accent on the cultural development of the University of Bucharest as a main vector of progress in the Romanian space. During the conference, the volume The University of Bucharest: 1864 – 2024 will be launched, a revised edition of the anniversary volume launched a decade ago, on the occasion of 150 years since the founding of UB.
Thursday, July 18th 2024, starting 3.30 PM, the UB Rectorate will host the debate 160 years of International relations. UB and the European and international university alliances, where representatives of international networks that UB is part of, such as CIVIS, and representatives of other European university alliances that include universities in Romania, ambassadors of the states hosting CIVIS member universities, as well as ambassadors of other states, will analyze and identify solutions to the challenges society is currently facing, next to decision makers in national institutions which have relevant relations with the European Union.
On the same day, July 18th 2024, students and volunteers of the Museum of the University of Bucharest and of the Faculty of History will organize a treasure hunt for the students of the 19 faculties. The competition will start in the Marble Hall of the UB Faculty of Letters (5 Edgar Quinet Street), for those students who have registered to it by filling in this form.
Friday, July 19th 2024, starting 5 PM, the UB community is invited to the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden to an event that closes a week dedicated to the celebration of 160 years since the founding of UB and 330 years of higher education in the Romanian space. Realized in partnership with students of the I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest (UNATC) and of the Students’ Association of the University of Bucharest (ASUB), as well as with the team conducting the SciResCareer project, the event proposes a creative guitar workshop, a photo corner, a time capsule, as well as an inspiring messages wall. The central element of the event is the theatre play The last night of love, the first night of war by Camil Petrescu, which will bring in front of the audience, starting 7 PM, UNATC students Vlad Anghel, Adriana Mitu, Silvia-Alexandra Bem, Paul Pristavu and Fabian Ciobanu. On this anniversary occasion, the University of Bucharest offers, between July 16th – 18th 2024, free access to the spaces of the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden and invites nature lovers to discover the over 3.500 plants it fosters.
Not lastly, the largest event dedicated to art in Romania, Art Safari, opens its gates to the UB community and offers free access on Tuesday, July 16th 2024, to all students of the University of Bucharest to the exhibitions in the series Mysteries and treasures. Thus, UB art lovers are expected to the Dacia-Romania Palace (18-20 Lipscani Street, Bucharest) to discover the exhibitions The history of Romania in 100 portraits, The gold in Brukenthal, The secret museum, Eustațiu Stoenescu. The portrait of aristocracy and the Pangratti workshops. Free access will be permitted for those attendants presenting a UB student ID.

The University of Bucharest was established by Decree no. 765 from July 4th/16th 1864 signed by Ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza.
