Included in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects since its launch in 2017, the University of Bucharest is the only Romanian university present in the ranking in the Earth Science subdomain.
The Earth Science subdomain ranks the University of Bucharest in the 401-500 range internationally.
Additionally, the University of Bucharest is also recognized in the subdomain of Mathematics, where it internationally ranks in the 151-200 range.
Launched in 2017, GRAS aims to provide detailed insights into the performance of universities based on academic subjects. The ranking evaluates institutions within five broad domains: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. Within these, 55 subdomains are analysed. The 2024 ranking includes over 1800 universities from 96 countries.

The University of Bucharest celebrated 160 years since its creation through the Decree no. 765 from 4 / 16 July 1864 of Ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza. As a successor of the higher education institutions inaugurated by the Princely Academy of Bucharest (1694), the University of Bucharest has contributed and continues to decisively contribute to the development and modernization of Romanian teaching, science and culture.
Today, the university comprises 19 faculties offering: 95 bachelor’s degrees, 223 master’s programs, 23 doctoral schools in specific fields, an interdisciplinary doctoral school, over 50 centres and 9 research institutes.
Since 2019, the University of Bucharest has been part of the Europe’s Civic University Alliance, a network of 11 prestigious universities, including: Aix-Marseille Université, National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Sapienza Università di Roma, Stockholms Universitet and Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, University of Glasgow, University of Lausanne, Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS).
