During a ceremony organized Tuesday, May 14th 2024, the University of Bucharest bestowed the distinction of Doctor Honoris Causa upon professor George A. Bermann, one of the most outstanding personalities of the American and international juridical life.
The Doctor Honoris Causa ceremony took place at the University of Bucharest’s Senate Hall (90 Panduri Avenue, Bucharest), starting 2:30 PM.
Affiliated professor at Ecole de Droit, Institut des Sciences Politiques in Paris and Georgetown University Law Center, professor Bermann is a founding member of the Advisory Board of the International Court of Arbitration, an International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris. Currently, he is a member of the Permanent Court Committee of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and of the ICC Commission on International Arbitration, and in addition he also co-chairs the Global Council of the International Arbitration Centre in New York.
Professor Bermann’s affinity with Romania dates back over a decade, during his tenure as the president of the Alternative Information & Development Centre (AIDC). Since then, constantly, professors and researchers across the country, especially young individuals from the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest, managed to assert themselves on the international stage, through national reports on various legal fields, contributions that were appreciated and published by notable publishers, under AIDC auspices.
Professor Bermann is a member of the Board of the American Arbitration Association and of the Board of the Centre for Prevention and Resolution of Disputes. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators of London. He is the Chief co-editor of the American Review of International Arbitration and member of the Editorial Board of Revue de l’Arbitrage.
Awarding the distinction of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Bucharest to professor George A. Bermann represents an acknowledgement of his professional and academic achievements in the service of numerous generations of jurists.
