The University of Bucharest will award, in a ceremony that will take place on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, the distinction of Doctor Honoris Causa to prof. Ionel Haiduc, one of the most significant personalities of Romanian chemistry.
Prof. Ionel Haiduc, Doctor Honoris Causa of the Polytechnic University in Bucharest, of the West University in Timișoara, member of the Europaea Academy, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova and the Academy of Sciences of Hungary, introduced several new topics of research, such as inorganic cycles, organometallic compounds of non-transition metals, organophosphorus ligands, organometallic compounds with antitumor activity and supramolecular chemistry. He was also the first personality from Romanian chemistry called to illustrate the Nenitzescu-Criegee Conferences, established by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (German Chemical Society) and the Romanian Academy.
Prof. Ionel Haiduc’s scientific work is impressive and appreciated all over the world, comprising over 350 publications in prestigious international journals, nine books, but also contributions in series of volumes in the profile of organometallic and supramolecular chemistry. In addition, prof. Ionel Haiduc left his mark on several generations of students, teaching at universities in Europe, Asia, North America and South America.
His book “Supramolecular Organometallic Chemistry” (1999), prefaced by prof. Jean-Marie Lehn, laureate of the Nobel Prize, and commended in international journals, prof. Ionel Haiduc opened a new direction in supramolecular chemistry. Prof. Ionel Haiduc also has an important role in Romanian cultural life, holding the position of president of the Romanian Academy between 2006 and 2014.
The granting of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Bucharest to prof. Ionel Haiduc is a sign of recognition of his prestigious scientific activity and sustained efforts to promote science.
The awarding event will take place on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, starting at 1:00 p.m., in the Senate Hall of the Rectorate of the University of Bucharest (Șoseaua Panduri no. 90).
