Sustainable Strategies for Preventing Biodeterioration of Cultural Heritage Objects and Churches
Project code: PN-IV-P7-7.1-PED-2024-2249
Contract number: 9 PED/2025

Project title: Sustainable Strategies for Preventing Biodeterioration of Cultural Heritage Objects and Churches
Acronym: ECO-CULT
Abstract:
The project aims to investigate eco-friendly solutions as alternatives to conventional physicochemical methods, minimizing (eco)toxicity in combating biodeterioration agents affecting Romanian cultural heritage objects and churches. A laboratory-scale model system will be developed for the ex situ simulation of the biodeterioration process affecting Romanian heritage items. This model will act as a platform for evaluating restoration and preservation solutions, including coatings that incorporate active ingredients from plant extracts and MgB2 nanopowders. The most effective plant extracts, demonstrating superior antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, and anti-enzymatic activities, will be incorporated into spray solutions and coatings for further evaluation against microbial recolonization. The project will assess the impact on microbial activity, the development of secondary biofilms on inert substrates, and the integrity of the substrate material. Additionally, the ecotoxicity and phytotoxicity of the biocidal compounds will be examined, especially since outdoor application may lead to soil contamination through rain washout. Ultimately, the proposed solutions aim to offer sustainable, broadly effective antimicrobial strategies for the conservation of Romanian heritage, avoiding adverse impacts on the ecosystem.
