Summary:
The project BioGraftPrint approaches an experimental and demonstrative research seeking the development of novel strategies for improving bone healing by means of advanced materials, methods and technologies. In line with this, the project aims at developing novel Zr2+/Sr2+-doped hydroxyapatite/collagen/chitosan –synthetic bone grafts with well-defined and controllable architecture by means of a new generation technique, namely 3D printing, which ensures high precision and customized production. In view of implementing the demonstrator model, the project begins from a conceptual level, represented by the compositional and morphological design of the product, which will be materialized by initiation of the active process of research and development involving material synthesis and characterization, as well as preliminary in vitro and in vivo laboratory studies. The successful accomplishment of relevant activities will be assured by a close synergistic cooperation between project partners with complementary expertise in the fields of bioengineering, material science, biology and medicine. Their previously cooperation in many national/international projects concerning biomaterials development represent a starting point for the further project implementation. Thus, to satisfy the project objectives, UPB will be responsible with the synthesis and characterization of the new graft materials, while UB will be involved in the in vitro biological evaluation and in vivo testing of the novel 3D-printed materials. Original contribution of each partner will be disseminated in order to generate novel knowledge regarding particular relations between material composition/physical/mechanical characteristics and biocompatibility/host tissue responses. By achieving these tasks, the current project will represent a step further towards the development of new bio-inspired materials which are expected to increase life expectancy of patients with bone related traumas.
The project objective is to develop novel Zr2+/Sr2+ doped hydroxyapatite /collagen/chitosan -synthetic bone grafts with well-defined and controllable architecture by means of 3D printing and, also, to investigate there in vitro and in vivo behavior.
The specific objectives of this project are:
Establishing the technology of substituting Ca2 +from HA with Sr2 + or Zn 2+
Development and demonstration of 3D printing technology
Synthesis of 3D interconnected scaffolds based on Sr2+/Zn2+– doped COLL/HA/CS
Evaluation of osteoblasts and macrophages response to the novel 3D-printed substrates
Obtaining of the Demonstrator Product – implants obtained by 3D printing
Assessment of the in vivo integration potential of the new developed implants
Expected results of the project are:
New knowledge regarding the development of the 3D printing technology
Obtaining the demonstrator product -3D printed composite scaffolds whose performance will be demonstrated by advanced biological in vitro and in vivo assays
New knowledge regarding development of 3D printed scaffolds and cell-material interactions, which will be disseminated through the project web site, ISI scientific papers and communications to scientific national and international reunions
