Andrada Fiscutean is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Studies, University of Bucharest, and a science and technology journalist. Her doctoral research explores how media professionals navigate and communicate the inherent uncertainty of science.
A seasoned broadcaster with more than 25 years of experience, she began her career in 1998 at Radio SON Reghin, where she initially hosted children’s programs. From 2006 to 2025, she worked at ProFM Bucharest, first as an editor and later as editor-in-chief of the news department. Since 2023, she has been a regular contributor to the BBC World Service’s science program Unexpected Elements.
In addition to her work in radio, Fiscutean has written extensively on science and technology for leading international publications, including The Guardian, Foreign Policy, Nature, Ars Technica, CSO Online, and Dark Reading. Her reporting often delves into topics such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, scientific breakthroughs, and the societal impact of emerging technologies. Her commitment to exploring the relationship between science, technology, and society was further recognized in 2019–2020, when she was awarded a Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Fiscutean’s work has earned multiple awards, among them Young Journalist of the Year in the Technology category (2012) and two Superscrieri Awards (2017) — Best Feature Story and the People’s Choice Award — for the article Crows vs. Pigeons, co-authored with Sorina Vasile for DoR magazine. Internationally, she has also been honored with three Azbee Awards (2020, 2024) and an Eddie Award (2023) in the United States. Over the years, her reporting has been supported by international grants from organizations such as the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, the European Excellence Exchange in Journalism & Free Press Unlimited, and IJ4EU – Investigative Journalism for Europe.
Since 2021, Fiscutean has taught the course Science and Technology Communication at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Studies. Building on this teaching experience, she co-edited, together with Cristina Radu, the digital handbook From the Field: A Science Journalism Guide, a project made possible through a grant from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Balkan Network of Science Journalists.
