Dr Athanasios-Alexandru Gavrilidis has been active as a researcher at the University of Bucharest since 2012 and has held the position of Lecturer since 2020 within the Faculty of Geography, Department of Regional Geography and Environment. A graduate of the Environmental Geography bachelor’s programme in 2009 and of the master’s programme Integrated Environmental Assessment in 2011, both within the Faculty of Geography (UB), Dr Gavrilidis defended his doctoral thesis entitled “Spatial and landscape effects of urban dynamics and expansion in Romania. Case study: the city of Ploiești” in 2014, under the supervision of Professor Ileana Pătru-Stupariu. The thesis was subsequently published in 2017 under the title “The projection of urban expansion and dynamics on the landscape. Case study: the Municipality of Ploiești.”
He began his career as a Research Assistant within the Centre for Environmental Research and Impact Studies (CCMESI) in 2012 and has since been involved in 12 funded research projects, including two as project director. Throughout his career, he has been contracted as an expert (GIS, biodiversity, anthropogenic impact, technical expert) in projects funded through structural funds, national programmes or private entities. His scientific output includes five books published by nationally recognised publishers, five book chapters published by internationally recognised publishers, and 24 ISI-indexed scientific articles, alongside 10 articles indexed in international databases (BDI). His research findings have been presented at over 40 international conferences in Romania and abroad.
Dr Gavrilidis’s teaching activity at the University of Bucharest includes courses in environmental assessment, biodiversity conservation, spatial and landscape planning, and GIS, delivered within both undergraduate and master’s programmes of the Faculty of Geography.
He has been a member of the Council of the Department of Regional Geography and Environment since 2023 and of the Research Ethics Sub-Committee of the University of Bucharest since 2024. He also serves as Treasurer of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE World) and of IALE Romania, and is a member of the Society for Urban Ecology (SURE) and the Alliance for Forests organisation.
