In the 10th episode of the SKEPSIS series, professor Cosima Rughiniș, PhD, teaching staff at the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, and Dragoș Obreja, PhD student of the Doctoral School of Sociology propose a sociological discussion on the logic of homeopathic practice, a controversial subject and a very active research field.
Starting from the popularity that homeopathy has gained among people around the world as a natural alternative to traditional medicine, in the 10th episode of SKEPSIS, the guests propose a discussion on the aspects which form the basis of this practice and the logic behind the practice.
Even if, in the last decades, homeopathy has been the subject of intense debates, the persons who are suffering sometimes choose to offer it credit. In this episode, we will find out the roots of skepticism and optimism regarding homeopathy.
At the same time, professor Cosima Rughiniș highlights the causes for people’s trust in homeopathic practices and the main characteristics that have transformed this practice into a persistent social phenomenon.
Cosima Rughiniș teaches at the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work of the University of Bucharest. Within the faculty, she teaches courses on the way in which social classifications contribute to the construction of reality. Her research interests include both aspects regarding the formation of gender and age representations in the public space, as well as the creation of certain cultural models in very different environments, from social software and digital games to graphic novels and school handbooks. Launched in October 2023, the SKEPSIS series is a project addressing the large audience in which UB researchers analyze, from a sociological perspective, scientific truth and public skepticism regarding some of the most controversial subjects of the moment. The series will explore the profound structures that influence our ways of perceiving and acting, when health, identity or our future are at stake.
The guests of this series, meant to explain the evolution of trust and skepticism regarding current topics, are professors, doctoral students and researchers within the academic community of the University of Bucharest.
The episodes format includes the presentation of the theme, followed by a dialogue between moderator and guest.
The video materials from this series are created by the Department of Communication and Public Relations of the University of Bucharest, and the results of the research are part of project SKEPSIS- Fabricating uncertainties regarding vaccination and climate change.
