Contemporary Literature Press
Contemporary Literature Press is a non-profit publishing house which functions under the University of Bucharest, the British Council, the Romanian Cultural Institute and the National Museum for Romanian Literature. All published books can be downloaded FOR FREE.
The publishing house focuses on top scientific research in literature and linguistics. Its peak performance in the direction of scientific research is Joyce Lexicography: A Manual for the Advanced Study of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, in 130 volumes. This series is well known worldwide and can be accessed here.
This publishing house places the University of Bucharest in the position of National Centre for the teaching of the English language through English literature. In the section Language Learning [https://editura.mttlc.ro/learning.html], all those who learn English can download the handbook in 7 volumes Metoda Lidia Vianu: Smile and Learn! An important part in tis respect is played by all the books published in both English and Romanian, under the form of Parallel Texts.
The purpose of CLP is double. First of all, the Publishing House makes classical and contemporary English literature accessible to all regions of Romania. Its volumes can be downloaded equally by large towns and small villages. Secondly, the Publishing House aims to publish Romanian contemporary authors translated into English, and British classical and contemporary authors translated into Romanian. In both cases, the volumes are published as Parallel Texts. Through what we have achieved so far, we have proven to be a good mediator between the two cultural spaces: Romania on the one hand, and the world at large, on the other, since English is the lingua franca nowadays. Each new book is sent to about 60.000 recipients: academic personalities, professors and teachers, students, writers, translators, editors, and intellectuals all over the world.
CLP publishes poetry, fiction, drama and literary criticism. Specialized research volumes are published [the Finnegans Wake Lexicons], as well as Romanian literature translated into English, English literature translated into Romanian, handbooks that teach the English language, linguistic and literary research volumes and dictionaries. CLP also publishes the works of painters and manuscripts that are important to Romania’s intellectual evolution.
The publishing house has at least two major directions. One direction focuses on creating very good virtual books, which are available internationally on the internet [http://editura.mttlc.ro/]. The second direction is the publication of literary works as Parallel Texts, which can significantly help those who study the English language.
CLP is also interested in top literary research. It has published so far quite a number of anthologies, among which there is one that focuses on the literary criticism of David Lodge, and which was edited by Lidia Vianu together with the author himself.
The publishing house also publishes Romanian authors translated into English by teams of Romanian translators and English writers, which makes the books highly competitive anywhere in the world. CLP has signed an agreement with a group of over 400 English poets represented by the literary agent Anne Stewart, who has included CLP on her website, http://www.poetrypf.co.uk/poetrypro.html. The name of the project is “Poetry pRO”.
Due to its complex activities and the large number of readers all over the globe, CLP has been granted the APLER Prize [The Association of Literary Publications in Romania] as “The Publishing House of the year 2020”.
