Professor and sociologist, Marian Preda has worked at the University of Bucharest since 1990. He was a board member of the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work of the University of Bucharest during 2000-2015, first as Vice-Dean (2000-2008), then as Dean (2008-2015). He was the President of the Senate of the University of Bucharest in the term 2015-2019. Among other activities, Professor Marian Preda has been teaching courses in Organizational Behavior, Social Policies, Strategic Management and Sociology of Time since 1994.
Marian Preda is part of the first series of students in Sociology after the Revolution in 1989. He graduated with a master’s degree in social policies from the University of Bucharest in 2005 and obtained a second master’s degree in Business Administration from Tiffin University in the USA in 2006. He holds a PhD in Sociology since 2001. He completed several internships abroad, including at Ruskin University in Cambridge and George Washington University, with a Fulbright scholarship.
For the past 25 years, alongside with his academic career, he has been manager, consultant or expert in numerous projects with national or international funding and has collaborated with organizations such as the UN – especially UNICEF and UNDP, the World Bank, Bernard Brunhes International (BBI) and the European Commission, through the PHARE and POSDRU programs.
At the same time, Marian Preda was President of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis of Social and Demographic Risks (2009-2010), member of the National Commission for Population (2007-2009, 2010-2012), President of the Society of Sociologists in Romania (2010-2012), and President of the National Statistical Council of the National Institute of Statistics (2016-2018, 2018-2020, 2021-2023).
Author and co-author of 26 books (two of which as single author and five as first author or coordinator), he has also published numerous articles, 11 of which are indexed Web of Science – Clarivate.
As Rector of the University of Bucharest, Professor Marian Preda is the initiator of Virtute et Sapientia Foundation, which, through the UB SEED program, supports students from low-income families in disadvantaged environments.
