Between July 11th – 12th 2024, the University in Istanbul (Turkey) hosted the 16th edition of the Congress Conference of Rectors from the Black Sea Region BSUN 2024.
The Black Sea Universities Network – BSUN is the largest inter-university cooperation platform from the extended region of the Black sea, involving 120 universities from the 12 member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization of the Black Sea, including Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, the Russian Federation, Turkey and Ukraine. BSUN aims to facilitate inter-university cooperation and generating of synergies between education, scientific research, innovation and cultural cooperation.
The University of Bucharest was represented at the event by professor Marian Preda, the Rector of the University of Bucharest and president of BSUN, by associate professor Sorin Costreie, president of the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe – UNICA and coordinator of the CIVIS Alliance in UB, by professor Lucian Ciolan, Vice-rector for Development projects and Lifelong Learning of the University of Bucharest, as well as by professor Marian Zulean, professor Elena Nolica Druică and professor Călin Vâlsan, teaching staff of the UB Faculty of Business and Administration.
The event was also attended by H.E. professor Emil Constantinescu, former rector of the University of Bucharest (1992–1996) and President of Romania (1996-2000), as well as by HE. Lazăr Comănescu, General Secretary of the Economic Cooperation Organization at the Black Sea (BSEC).
Within the 2024 Congress, professor Marian Zulean presented the volume „Social Values and Identities in the Black Sea Region”, edited by lecturer Mălina Voicu, dr. Kseniya Kizilova and professor Marian Zulean.
This year’s event took the form of Summit of the Future for the extended region of the Black Sea. This aims to integrate in the global efforts to contribute to the works of the UN General Assembly, which will be held this September in New York, with the objective of adopting a Pact for the Future. The results of the Congress will be expressed under the title Declaration of the Rectors of the BSUN Member Universities.
Among the subjects discusses during the 2024 Congress, we mention: promoting scientific based decisions in society and the role of universities, transforming education and society, a new peace agenda in the extended region of the Black Sea and the reform of the regional cooperation institutions, pathways for a pact for the future of the extended region of the Black Sea.
