The Department of Romance and Classical Languages of the Faculty of Letters at the University of Craiova, in partnership with the French Institute in Bucharest, the Italian Cultural Institute in Bucharest, and the Cervantes Institute in Bucharest, organized the 7th edition of the National Translation Contest between Romance languages (French, Italian, Romanian, Spanish) and Latin. The event took place on Monday, May 12, 2025, in celebration of Latinity Day, which is celebrated annually on May 15.
At this year’s edition, the University of Bucharest won 4 awards, with students and master’s students from the Italian section of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures securing a full UB podium:
- First Prize – Arina-Casiana Oancea (1st-year student, Master’s in Latin–Romance Translation Studies, supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Roxana Utale)
- Second Prize – Patricia-Gabriela Armean (1st-year student, Master’s in Latin–Romance Translation Studies, supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Roxana Utale)
- Third Prize – Alexandra-Gabriela Dănășel, 1st-year student
Additionally, student Bianca Andreea Godea placed second among the candidates in the French section.
The award ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in Room 135 (Italian Lectureship) of the main building of the University of Craiova, starting at 9:30 AM.
The competition had two distinct sections, and students wishing to participate could choose one of the following:
- Translating a literary criticism text from Romanian into one of the following languages: French, Italian, or Spanish, at B1–B2 level, based on participants’ chosen preferences;
- Translating a text from Latin into Romanian.
This year’s edition gathered 45 students from the following universities: the University of Bucharest, “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, “Ștefan cel Mare” University of Suceava, West University of Timișoara, “Ovidius” University of Constanța, Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiești, and the University of Craiova.
