According to the latest ranking released today, March 12, 2025, by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the University of Bucharest (UB) has been recognized as the leading university in Romania in five subject areas: Linguistics, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Computer Science & Information Systems, and Chemistry. The 2025 edition of the QS Rankings by Subject highlights the performance of 1.730 universities worldwide.
On an international scale, the University of Bucharest ranks within the 201–250 range for Linguistics and Modern Languages, the 201–225 range for Philosophy, and within the 501–550 range for Computer Science & Information Systems (alongside ”Babeș-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca). It also ranks in the 601–700 range for Chemistry (alongside ”Politehnica” National University of Science and Technology, Bucharest).
Nationally, the University of Bucharest is the sole Romanian university included in the Linguistics and Philosophy rankings.
Furthermore, the university holds second place nationally in Mathematics (ranked 301–350 globally) and Physics (ranked 501–550 globally).
Based on these results, the QS World University Rankings by Subject places the University of Bucharest in three of the five fundamental fields within the 501–550 international range: Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject assesses universities based on indicators such as academic reputation, citation counts of published works, employer reputation, the impact and quality of research published by faculty members (h-index), and the effectiveness of interinstitutional collaborations (IRN). The University of Bucharest was founded by Decree No. 765 issued on July 4/16, 1864, by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. As the successor to higher education institutions established by the Princely Academy (1694), the university has played a crucial role in the development and modernization of Romanian education, science, and culture.
Today, the university comprises 19 faculties, offering 95 undergraduate programs, 223 master’s programs, 23 doctoral schools focused on specific disciplines, one interdisciplinary doctoral school, over 50 research centers, and nine research stations.
Since 2019, UB has been a member of the European Civic University (CIVIS), alongside ten other prestigious European universities: Aix-Marseille University, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Free University of Brussels, Autonomous University of Madrid, Sapienza University of Rome, Stockholm University, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, University of Glasgow, University of Lausanne, and Paris Lodron University of Salzburg.
