Between July, 21–24, 2025, in Sultana (Călărași County, Romania), took place a new edition of the ArchaeoSciences Summer Schools, entitled “Zooarchaeology & Anthropology.”
The event was organized by the ArchaeoSciences Platform (ASp) of the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB), within the interdisciplinary research project “The dynamics of prehistoric communities in the Mostiștea and Danube valleys,” in partnership with Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Germany), HoGent (Belgium), The Museum of Bucharest, The Museum of the Lower Danube Călărași, “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology of the Romanian Academy, National History Museum of Romania (MNIR), and the Gumelnița Civilization Museum, Oltenița (Romania).
Part of the “Sultana School of Archaeology” initiative, this summer school was primarily dedicated to students currently participating in archaeological work at the site.
Highlights of the program
- zooarchaeological methodology and practical workshops with faunal remains
- case studies on animal economy (Alexandria, Conduratu)
- physical anthropology: bioanthropological profiling, human bone pathology, isotope studies
- case study: horses and riders from Săveni
The event was coordinated by Dr. habil. Valentin Radu (University of Bucharest /MNIR), Dr. habil. Adrian Bălășescu and Dr. Gabriel Vasile (“Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology of the Romanian Academy).

The ArchaeoSciences Summer Schools is a recent initiative targeting students, MA and PhD candidates, offering hands-on introductions to interdisciplinary approaches in archaeological science.
