Recently, the University of Oxford launched a call for applications for the Rhodes Scholarship, the oldest, most competitive and, probably, the most prestigious postgraduate scholarship in the world. Interested UB graduates can apply by Thursday, August 1st 2024.
Granted for the first time in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarship has been won by great personalities, such as Bill Clinton or Cory Booker. Applying for the scholarship is a challenge, but it is also an experience which has helped generations of young people to succeed. More information about the Rhodes Scholarship can be found here.
To apply for the Rhodes Scholarship, candidates must have literary and scholastic attainments, as well as the energy to use their talents at their fullest potential (in sports, music, debates, dance, theatre, artistic activities). At the same time, they must prove they possess courage, moral force of character, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship.
Eligibility criteria can be accessed here, and registrations for this round of applications will open in July.
In 2004, Cristina A. Bejan, a renowned writer, professor and Romanian-American cultural agent, obtained the Rhodes Scholarship, and the interview on this experience is available here. In 2022, she published, at the Tracus Arte Press, the poetry volume titled Green Horses on the Walls.
The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University course fees, as well as providing an annual stipend. For the 2023/24 academic year, the stipend is £19,092 per annum (£1,591 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation. More details on conditions of tenure of the Rhodes Scholarship are available at this link. In addition, the Rhodes Trust will cover transportation costs, the Oxford application fee, as well as the student visa fee and the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS).
