Contemporary Literature Press, under The University of Bucharest, in conjunction with The British Council, The Romanian Cultural Institute, and The Writers’ Union of Romania, announces the publication of “Authors and Books published by Contemporary Literature”.
Founded in the year 2006, Contemporary Literature Press aims at supporting the study of the English language through its literature. It is the online publishing house of the University of Bucharest.
“The publishing house which has recently been awarded The Prize for the Publishing House of the year 2020 by the Romanian Association of Literary Publications and Publishing Houses and by the Romanian Ministry of Culture, began quite shyly, in my own study. A computer, the internet and the MA Programme for the Translation of Contemporary Literature [which I founded in 2006] a programme that may have taught me more than I have taught my graduate students. Twelve years after that beginning, here we are, with almost 500 books published, out of which 130 are cutting edge research [A Manual for the Advanced Study of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake], and seven are dedicated to my method of teaching English grammar to Romanian students by means of translation.
The books we have published total thousands of downloads, despite the fact that certain internet sites appropriate our books and spread them in their name, preventing us from seeing the real number of readers on our meters. We pretend not to see this intellectual theft, because we are totally non-profit, and are happy just to see our books are being read. When we launch a book, we try to be of use to our readers. All our books can be downloaded for free. Our first aim is to help all those who wish to learn English and read English books. Besides this didactic goal, we also have a cultural one: we are trying to build a bridge between contemporary Romanian and English writers. We seem to have reached quite a large audience, and we mean to go on spreading Romanian and British literature in the world.
We are now publishing the list of Authors and Books published by Contemporary Literature Press in hopes that more readers will approach us. We are grateful to all those readers who have been faithful to us for twelve years now”, said Professor Lidia Vianu, founder of CLP.
It publishes mainly bilingual volumes, as parallel texts, English and Romanian: classical and contemporary English literature, contemporary Romanian literature translated into English [among others, by the students of the MA Programme for the Translation of the Contemporary Literary Text]. It also publishes handbooks of teaching and testing English, archives of authors and painters, histories of English literature.
All the books published can be downloaded for free and one of the major aims of the publishing house is to offer books of good intellectual quality to readers all over Romania, and to the English speaking world.
