Students and members of the academic community of the University of Bucharest are invited to take part this autumn in the multilingual language cafés organized as part of the CIVIS Alliance. The meetings give participants the opportunity to practice their language skills, discover related languages, and communicate with students from other European universities.
The language cafés are jointly organized by Stockholm University, the University of Salzburg, and the University of Thessaly and are open to students and staff members of all CIVIS member universities.
Participants can choose from three options: Romance Language Cafe, Slavic Language Cafe, and Nordic Language Cafe.
Romance Language Cafe
Romanian, French, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish – Romance languages come together in a virtual space where it is not necessary for all participants to speak the same language.
The Romance Language Cafe brings together speakers of Romance languages at B1 level or above, whether they are native speakers or are learning one of these languages. Participants are encouraged to communicate in their own language and discover how much they can understand one another thanks to similarities in vocabulary and grammatical structure.
During the meetings, they will have the opportunity to develop multilingual communication strategies, such as reformulation, repetition, the use of words with the same origin, or adapting the pace of the conversation.
The meetings will take place every Thursday, from 14:00 to 14:50 (CEST), online via Zoom. The first meeting will take place on Thursday, 24 September 2026.
The event is coordinated by Dr. Cristoph Hülsmann (University of Salzburg) and Dr. Anastasia Gkaintartzi (University of Thessaly).

Slavic Language Cafe
Those who speak Polish, Russian, Czech, Ukrainian, Croatian, or another Slavic language at B1 level or above are invited to participate in the Slavic Language Cafe.
The meetings create a setting in which participants can explore the similarities between Slavic languages, practice their communication skills, and discover new languages and linguistic varieties.
The Slavic Language Cafe will take place every Tuesday, from 13:00 to 13:50 (CEST), from 29 September to 1 December 2026, online via Zoom.

Nordic Language Cafe
Those who know Danish, Faroese, Icelandic, Norwegian, or Swedish at B1 level or above are invited to participate in the Nordic Language Cafe.
The meetings give participants the opportunity to practice their language skills, discover new varieties of the Nordic languages, and explore the degree of mutual intelligibility between them.
The meetings will take place every Tuesday, from 15:30 to 16:20 (CEST), online via Zoom.

The language cafés offer a different perspective on foreign language learning. Participants are invited to discover how they can communicate when interlocutors use different but related languages.
The initiative also represents an opportunity for students of the University of Bucharest to interact with members of the academic communities of other European universities and to explore, in a relaxed setting, the linguistic and cultural diversity of the European space.
