The Public Diplomacy Office of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest is pleased to announce the 2025 edition of the Summer Institute for Scholars Program, a scholarship opportunity open to university faculty, researchers, and professionals affiliated with research-focused organizations.
The program welcomes applications from members of the academic community at the University of Bucharest, as well as professors, researchers, and colleagues from other higher education institutions and research institutes in Romania. Professionals from research-oriented organizations, including non-profits, NGOs, and civic activism groups, are also encouraged to apply.
The Summer Institute for Scholars Program offers participants a comprehensive understanding of American society, culture, values, and institutions. This year’s program includes the following focus areas: American Politics and Political Thought, American Contemporary Literature, Journalism and Media, U.S. Culture, Identity, and Society, U.S. Economics and Sustainable Development, and U.S. Foreign Policy.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must be between 30 and 50 years old and in a productive stage of their career. Proficiency in English at an advanced level is required.
To apply, candidates must first request a standard application form (in Word format) by sending a letter of intent to alexandrescui@state.gov. Completed application forms must then be submitted to the same email address. Candidates are encouraged to select only the focus areas that align with their academic or professional profiles.
The deadline for submitting applications is Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 11:59 PM (Romanian time).
A total of 18 scholarships will be awarded.
Selection Process:
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with a member of the U.S. diplomatic team. This interview will assess their suitability for the program and their English proficiency.
Priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate clear plans to enhance research and education, develop or update courses and educational materials with an American studies focus, and those with limited or no prior experience in the United States. A proven interest in the program’s topics, evidenced by previous achievements, research, or professional work, will also be a key factor.
The program runs for six weeks, from late May to early July 2025, at prestigious universities in the United States. All expenses are fully covered by the organizers. Participants will receive detailed information about the schedule, host universities, and logistical arrangements closer to the start of the program.
