The workshop aims to bring together professors and researchers from CIVIS member universities, as well as other academic institutions, who are interested in exploring the construction and deconstruction of national identity from the 19th to the 21st century. Contributions are encouraged that approach this topic from a range of inter and transdisciplinary perspectives, including linguistic, literary, historical, and artistic.
Papers that highlight the complex and at times conflicting facets of concepts such as castellanismo, italianità, românism, and francité are especially welcome. These may address tensions such as unity/diversity, ethnocentrism/ cultural relativism, patriotism/chauvinism, and nationalism/cosmopolitanism, while also reflecting on the challenges that may undermine linguistic and cultural identity, such as migration, globalization, and transnationalism.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
the evolution of identity-related concepts
configurations and reconfigurations of identity symbols
representations of national identity in literature and the arts
hybrid identities in migratory contexts
language and cultural policies
strategies for promoting identity markers
Presentations may be delivered in Spanish, Italian, Romanian, or English.
Abstracts (200-300 words) should be sent to carmen.burcea@lls.unibuc.ro by September 15, 2025.
