In December 2023, the Global Campus of Human Rights, the university network comprising 41 universities, among which the University of Bucharest, has received the North-South Centre Prize of the Council of Europe.
In motivating the bestowment of this distinction, the jury mentioned that it was offered as recognition for the “crucial efforts in assuring an accessible high-quality education, and in cultivating European dialogue and North-South solidarity within an academic community to support universal human rights and democratic values”.
Since 1995, the Council of Europe awards this distinction to personalities and/or organizations. The candidates must have had a significant contribution in the field of human rights, defending democracy, promoting interdependency and global solidarity.
The prestigious distinction was awarded according to the information communicated by the universities members of the GCHR Network regarding the number of students from states that do not belong in the Council of Europe, and who participate in bachelor’s, masters’ or doctoral programs, as well as teaching staff that belong to these superior education institutions.
The Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Bucharest has contributed to this prize through the high number of students that participate in its programs. It is a distinction to which all the members of the UB academic community have contributed, highlighted Professor Radu Carp, teaching staff at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Bucharest.
