On Tuesday, 11 November 2025, a delegation from the University of Bucharest took part in the launch event of the project DANUBIUS-RO-2 – Support for the Development and Consolidation of DANUBIUS-RO, one of Romania’s most significant research initiatives, carried out in partnership by nine national research institutes and universities.
With a total budget of nearly 10 million euros (49,290,894.67 lei), the project aims to ensure the full integration of DANUBIUS-RO into DANUBIUS-RI and to position Romania as the coordinating country of a pan-European research infrastructure recognized as a strategic project within the European Research Area.
The launch event brought together representatives from academia, public authorities, the private sector, and partner organizations, marking the beginning of a new stage in the development of interdisciplinary scientific collaboration dedicated to the study of the environment, water systems, and climate change. The University of Bucharest was represented at the conference by Prof. Carmen Chifiriuc, UB Vice-Rector for Research and faculty member at the Faculty of Biology, and by Prof. Carmen Postolache, also from the Faculty of Biology. They highlighted the strategic role of the project in strengthening Romania’s contribution to European research networks and in developing scientific infrastructure dedicated to the integrated study of river-sea systems.
Also attending the launch were Andrei Alexandru, President of the National Authority for Research, Tudor Prisecaru, Vice-President of the National Authority for Research, Viorel Vulturescu, member of the Authority’s International Relations Directorate, and Mihnea Cosmin Costoiu, Rector of the National University of Science and Technology “Politehnica” Bucharest.
Alongside the University of Bucharest, the national consortium implementing the DANUBIUS-RO-2 project includes the National Institute for Research and Development in Biological Sciences, the National Institute for Research and Development for Marine Geology and Geoecology, the National Institute for Research and Development “Danube Delta,” the “Sabba S. Ștefănescu” Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy, Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, the National University of Science and Technology “Politehnica” Bucharest, the West University of Timișoara, and the Technical University of Civil Engineering of Bucharest.
DANUBIUS-RO-2: A new step forward for Romanian research
DANUBIUS-RO-2 aims to provide support for the development of human and operational resources of the DANUBIUS-RO infrastructure through actions that:
- strengthen the existing scientific base;
- expand national and international connectivity;
- prepare the logistical and functional framework for the activities to be carried out within DANUBIUS-ERIC, the pan-European infrastructure dedicated to the study of river-sea systems.
The project represents an essential step toward the full operationalization of the national infrastructure DANUBIUS-RO and seeks to reinforce human-resource capacity, expand physical and digital infrastructure, and consolidate Romania’s international standing within the DANUBIUS-RI initiative and the DANUBIUS-ERIC consortium.
At the same time, the project lays the groundwork for the sustainable and integrated functioning of the DANUBIUS infrastructure at both national and European levels.
Nationally, the project will support the development of advanced monitoring and analysis infrastructure within the Analytical Node and the Danube Delta and Iron Gates Supersites, contributing to the enhancement of Romania’s scientific and technological performance.
Through its activities, DANUBIUS-RO-2 will create new bridges of collaboration among researchers, authorities, and citizens, helping strengthen the capacity of local communities to respond to environmental and climate challenges with science-based solutions.
At present, the national DANUBIUS-RO infrastructure- the Romanian component of DANUBIUS-RI, which includes the Central Hub, the Danube Delta Supersite, and the Analytical Node – is in an active development phase, with essential components at various stages of technical and logistical preparation.
In June 2025, international recognition was achieved with the official establishment of DANUBIUS-ERIC, a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) that provides unified governance and operations for the pan-European DANUBIUS-RI infrastructure.
For the general public, the DANUBIUS-RO infrastructure will directly support better understanding and monitoring of the environment, contributing to more effective prevention and response measures for extreme events such as floods.
The project is funded through the National Plan for Research, Development and Innovation 2022–2027 (PNCDI IV), under Program 5.9 – Research in Strategic Interest Areas, Sub-program 5.9.4 – River, Delta, Sea Systems – DANUBIUS, with a total budget of 49,290,894.67 lei.
Full details about the project are available on the official website.
