The Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB) and the Faculty of Biology launch the University of Bucharest Mycology Club (UBMC).
UBMC is an initiative that encourages and supports the University of Bucharest’s community to develop interdisciplinary educational programs, scientific collaborations, outdoor fieldwork, and conservation of mycology. It aims to bring together students, researchers, staff, faculty and national and international partners to engage in hands on learning and an interdisciplinary exchange among the entire UB community.
Organized by the Faculty of Biology of UB and the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB), UBMC is initiated and coordinated by Ahmed M. Abdel-Azeem (Zemo), Professor of Mycology, Suez Canal University, Egypt, ICUB and the University of the Free State, South Africa, and Carmen Chifiriuc, vice-rector of Research and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Bucharest.
Objectives
- Education & Skills Training – offers workshops, laboratory training and seminars.
- Research Engagement – facilitates access to University of Bucharest research projects and related activities.
- Field Work & Biodiversity Surveys – conducts seasonal mushroom forays and ecological monitoring.
- Conservation Outreach – produces awareness materials, brochures and educates the public.
- Interdisciplinary Engagement – fosters collaboration across disciplines and international partners.
Key Projects/Activities
- Monthly Seminars with UB faculty and invited international mycologists.
- Workshops: fungal culture, identification, microscopy, and molecular diagnostics.
- Field Forays & Surveys combining biodiversity documentation and ecological observations.
- UB MycoDay (Annual Event) – public exhibition during UB Open Days.
- Online Resources: identification guides, cultivation manuals, and conservation tool kits.
