Following the petition „Save the Memory of the Revolution” published yesterday, December 16, 2024, by several organizations concerning „the preservation of the only inscriptions in Romania remaining from the 1989 Revolution on the University of Bucharest Palace”, we make the following clarifications:
(1) The project for the consolidation and restauration of the University of Bucharest Palace, one of the city’s emblematic monuments, aims to restore the roofing and framework (including exterior joinery), functional modifications, and the restauration of interior finishes, as well as the rehabilitation of utility systems.
(2) Following the completion of a study concerning testimonies of the 1989 Revolution and the Mineriads (written messages or bullet marks), the project already includes, as the University of Bucharest has publicly announced in the past, a series of activities and works dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of the archaeological remains in the inner courtyard through the establishment of a museum space. Additionally, the project involves a series of activities that will lead to the creation of a museum dedicated to the Romanian Revolution of 1989 in the room adjacent to the University Balcony. This will include the execution and installation of graphic elements with a specific visual identity in the area of the façade adjacent to the balcony.
More details about the consolidation and restoration project for the University of Bucharest Palace, as well as a series of projections/proposals for the building’s development, are available here.
