From 8 to 10 October 2025, the University of Bucharest will host the first CIVIS Staff Week open to members of other European University alliances. Entitled “How Flexible Learning Pathways are Transforming Higher Education: The Case of CIVIS BIPs,” the event will explore how international mobility and flexible learning are reshaping the landscape of higher education.
Building on the experience of CIVIS – Europe’s Civic University Alliance, which has developed more than 200 Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) in just three years and engaged over 5.000 students and staff from across Europe, this Staff Week will offer participants a hands-on, practical perspective on how BIPs can foster modular, interdisciplinary, and learner-centred education.
The training programme is aimed at academic and administrative staff from European universities interested in developing flexible learning pathways through BIPs. Participants will have the opportunity to:
Learn how to design and implement flexible, learner-centred BIPs;
Discover how modular education supports lifelong learning and academic interoperability;
Explore practical tools for creating inclusive and interdisciplinary programmes;
Analyse models for integrating mobility and digital tools into university curricula;
Collaborate with peers from across Europe who are committed to innovation in higher education.
The interactive and hands-on workshops will equip participants with concrete tools and strategies to implement flexible learning formats that respond to the increasingly diverse needs of students and institutions. Some of the activities scheduled for 8 and 9 October will be streamed live on the University of Bucharest’s official Facebook page.
Among the guest speakers are Yann-Maël Bideau, Policy Officer at the European Commission (participating online), and Olga Wessels (University of Amsterdam), Head of the ECIU Alliance Brussels Office and Coordinator of the FOREU4ALL Alliance.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
Analyse strategies for implementing flexible learning pathways in higher education;
Design a learner-centred BIP that combines academic content with physical and virtual mobility;
Recognize the role of BIPs in strengthening international collaboration and academic interoperability among European universities.
Regardless of whether participants come from universities that are part of the European Universities Initiative or not, they will have the opportunity to learn directly from the CIVIS experience and apply the principles of this innovative model within their own institutional contexts.
