Between October 31st– November 1st 2024, the West University of Timișoara (UVT) organized and hosted the conference „Academic Diplomacy in the Context of the European University Alliance”. The co-organizers of the event were the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalization.
Romiță Iucu, PhD, president of the UB Board of Trustees, and teaching staff at the UB Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, „Doctor Honoris Causa Socialium Scientiarum” of UVT, and Sorin Costreie, PhD, president of the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe- UNICA, coordinator of the CIVIC Alliance at UB and professor at the Faculty of Philosophy were the delegates of the University of Bucharest. They were joined by PhD Student Alexandru Carțiș.
On the first day of the event, professor Romiță Iucu was a keynote speaker at the roundtable „Knowledge and Science Diplomacy: Romania in Europe through European University Alliances. The benefits of Romanian Universities’ Participation in European University Alliances. Perspectives on Education, Research, and Diplomacy”, while Professor Sorin Costreie took part in the workshop titled „European Diploma. National and European perspectives”.
The second day of the event included a session dedicated to reconnecting with the academic diaspora, emphasizing the role of European university alliances in supporting research and education with an international dimension „at home”.
21 universities in Romania, members of European University Alliances
The „Academic Diplomacy in the Context of the European University Alliances” conference reunited delegates of Romanian universities that are members of European university alliances, government representatives, and diplomatic missions representatives— including Romanian ambassadors in Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Hungary—as well as researchers.
The event focused on the topic of collaboration between academia and the diplomatic sector to develop a vision for representing Romania internationally and reconnecting with the diaspora through the presence of 21 Romanian universities in European university alliances.
The reunion is part of efforts to maximize the opportunities of the „European Universities” initiative and the national impact of the participation of 21 higher education institutions from Romania in this European Commission initiative.
UB has been a member of the CIVIS Europe’s Civic University Alliance since 2019, while UVT has been a member of the UNITA University Alliance for four years.
