Thursday, June 16, 2022, prof. Mircea Dumitru, PhD, professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest and vice-president of the Romanian Academy, will receive, from the “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, the title of “Doctor Honoris Causa”. The ceremony will take place in the Great Hall of the “Babeş-Bolyai” University (UBB) (str. Mihail Kogălniceanu, no. 1), starting at 12:00.
The title is awarded following the proposal made by the representatives of the Faculty of History and Philosophy of UBB for his original contribution, of major importance in the field of philosophy and logic, for the contribution to the promotion of new programs and top interdisciplinary research, for the long and fruitful collaboration with “Babeș-Bolyai” University.
During the event, Laudatio will be presented by prof. Dan Eugen Rațiu, PhD, vice dean of the Faculty of History and Philosophy of UBB.
At the same time, one day after the ceremony of awarding the title of “Doctor Honoris Causa” to prof. Mircea Dumitru, PhD, “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, through the Faculty of History and Philosophy, organizes on Friday, June 17, 2022, starting with 10:00, the symposium “New explorations in logic, philosophy and cognitive sciences. In honor of Mircea Dumitru”.
The event will take place in the Club Hall of the Academic College (1 Emmanuel de Martonne Street). In the opening of the event, prof. Daniel David, PhD, Rector of UBB will give a speech. Academician Mircea Dumitru will give a lecture entitled “Neutral relations from the perspective of metaphysics, philosophy of language and mind and ethics. A sketch of a philosophical systematics”, followed by the debate “Themes from the philosophical foundations of cognitive neuroscience”.
The moderators of the event will be prof. Dan Eugen Rațiu, PhD, and prof. Ion Copoeru, PhD, professors at UBB.
Prof. Mircea Dumitru (61 years old) is a philosopher and logician. He attended high school in Craiova and Bucharest and university studies at the Faculty of History-Philosophy, University of Bucharest. In 1998 he received his doctorate in philosophy, logical specialization and philosophy of mathematics from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA; In the same year, he obtained a second doctorate in philosophy, major in philosophy of language, at the University of Bucharest.
He carried out a fruitful didactic activity at the Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Theoretical and Logical Philosophy within the University of Bucharest. He has been a visiting professor at Jean Moulin University in Lyon, the University of Helsinki, the City University of New York and New York University. In his research activity he focused especially on philosophical and symbolic logic, philosophy of language, metaphysics of modalities, epistemology, philosophy of mind and consciousness. Vice-rector of the University of Bucharest (2008-2011) and rector between 2011-2019. Between July 2016 and January 2017, he was Minister of Education and Scientific Research. In 2014, the Romanian Academy elected him a corresponding member and afterwards he became a full member in 2021. From the same year he is the president of the Department of Philosophy, Theology, Psychology and Pedagogy of the Romanian Academy and the director of the Institute of Philosophy and Psychology “Constantin Rădulescu Motru” of the Romanian Academy. He received the “Mircea Florian” award of the Romanian Academy in 2001, and in 2021 the French state awarded him the “Officier de l’Ordre du Mérit” award. Currently, prof. Mircea Dumitru, PhD, holds the position of Executive Director of the US-Romania Fulbright Commission.
