Between June 18–20, 2025, a delegation from the University of Bucharest took part in the 35th edition of the UNICA General Assembly & Rectors’ Seminar. The event, hosted by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, focused on the theme: “The key role of the Humanities in our Universities.”
The University of Bucharest’s delegation to the 2025 edition of the UNICA General Assembly & Rectors’ Seminar included: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorin Costreie, President of the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe – UNICA, professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, and CIVIS Alliance coordinator at UB, Prof. Dr. Acad. Mircea Dumitru, Vice President of the Romanian Academy and professor at UB’s Faculty of Philosophy, Alina Cristovici, Director of UB’s Department of International Relations.
The UNICA General Assembly 2025 brought together leaders (or designated representatives) from 34 member institutions of the UNICA network, representing higher education institutions from European capital cities. During this administrative segment of the event, attendees voted to renew the mandates of the members of the UNICA Steering Committee, confirmed the election of the new UNICA Secretary General, and validated the election of the IRO Observer to the Steering Committee.
As part of the Rectors’ Seminar 2025, Prof. Dr. Acad. Mircea Dumitru delivered a keynote lecture titled “The End of the Humanities? Why Do We Still Need Liberal Arts and Humanistic Education in the Universities?” The lecture addressed the current challenges facing the humanities in the global higher education landscape.

The University of Bucharest also participated in the second edition of “UNICA Days” in Brussels this February
From February 26–28, 2025, the second edition of UNICA Days was held in Brussels, an annual flagship event of the UNICA network. The central theme of this edition was: “The role of university networks in the Context of European University Alliances.” The University of Bucharest was represented by: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorin Costreie, and Prof. Dr. Lucian Ciolan, Vice-Rector for Development Projects, Lifelong Learning, and Educational Infrastructure at UB, professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, and Romania’s representative in the Council of the European Educational Research Association (EERA). Also on the agenda was Prof. Dr. Romiță Iucu, President of UB’s Council for Strategic Guidance and Analysis and professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, in his capacity as coordinator of the EduLAB Working Group within UNICA. During the UNICA Days 2025 sessions, UB’s representatives made several contributions, actively participating in debates and initiatives related to European higher education.
The Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA) is made up of 56 universities from 41 European capital cities, representing over 1.5 million students. The University of Bucharest joined UNICA in 1993.
