According to the 2025 edition of the Annual Report on the Digital Presence of Romanian Universities, the University of Bucharest ranks first nationwide in terms of online activity.
The initiative highlights higher education institutions that effectively use the digital environment for public communication, academic branding, and community engagement.
The study, coordinated by Lecturer Dorin Spoaller of the Faculty of Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, analyzed the official online activity of all 87 accredited universities in Romania.
Its methodology was designed to provide a coherent, comparable, and reproducible framework, capable of objectively capturing both the level and quality of the digital presence of accredited universities in Romania.
The analytical framework integrates three major dimensions: performance of official websites, search engine optimization (SEO), and activity on social media platforms – each assessed through specific quantifiable indicators, selected for their strategic relevance and measurability.
University of Bucharest in the “Green Zone” of the ranking
The University of Bucharest is placed in the “Green Zone” of the ranking, which includes institutions whose official websites are mobile-friendly, modern in design, clearly structured, regularly updated, and provide functional international versions – facilitating both the attraction of foreign students and the development of international collaborations.
The “Green Zone” represents the top third of the overall ranking, characterized by a solid, coherent, and well-optimized digital presence. Institutions in this category stand out for functional, updated, and accessible websites, favorable search engine rankings, and professional use of social media, with consistent messaging and high levels of interaction. Being in the Green Zone indicates not only technical performance but also a mature strategic approach to digital communication, according to the ranking’s methodology.
For the official websites component, evaluation covered structure, design, functionality, ease of navigation, accessibility, content quality and freshness, compliance with legal norms, and adaptation to mobile devices. Special attention was given to the way these platforms fulfill their role as a central information hub for all categories of audiences – from prospective students and faculty members to institutional partners and media.
For SEO, indicators such as page loading speed, mobile optimization, internal link structure, use of metadata, keyword performance, accessibility standards, and technical errors were considered. The aim of this component was to assess the extent to which universities’ websites are configured to achieve maximum visibility in organic search results, a key factor in attracting and informing target audiences.
For social media presence, the analysis looked at major platforms consistently used by universities (such as Facebook), considering the number of followers, posting frequency and diversity, audience engagement, visual identity coherence, content alignment with platform specifics, and integration into institutional communication strategy. This analysis aims to highlight the universities’ ability to use social media as active tools for information, promotion, and strengthening the academic community.
The University of Bucharest’s top position reflects its ability to adapt communication to diverse audiences – high school students, university students, faculty members, and institutional partners. Content published on UB’s official channels is aligned with online trends, featuring dynamic visuals, interactive materials, and integrated campaigns tied to major academic events.
The ranking underlines the importance of an integrated approach where websites, SEO, and social media work synergistically. UB’s first-place position demonstrates that continuous investment in digital infrastructure, relevant content, and technical optimization generates measurable results not only in terms of visibility but also in strengthening institutional reputation. Ongoing activity across UB’s website, social media, and video channels is reinforced by transparent, relevant communication that enhances accessibility and promotes internationalization. Through innovation, diversity, and coherence in communication, the University of Bucharest maintains an authentic dialogue with its community and confirms its leadership in the digital academic space.
