Students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest have achieved outstanding results at the 20th edition of the South Eastern European Mathematical Competition for University Students – SEEMOUS 2026.
The 2026 edition took place from March 3 – 8, and was hosted by the Cyprus Mathematical Society (CMS), and was organized in collaboration with the Mathematical Society of South-Eastern Europe (MASSEE). Teams from 29 universities in Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkmenistan participated in the event, reuniting a total of 94 students.
The University of Bucharest was represented by four students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, all of whom secured a spot on the podium at SEEMOUS 2025:

Silver medals: Răzvan Nicolau, Dacian-Dumitru Robu, Eduard Toc
The team’s preparation was carried out within the Center for Excellence in Mathematics, coordinated by Associate Professor Cătălin Gherghe, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest. The team was accompanied to Paphos by Dan Dumitrescu, a former medalist at this competition and currently a master’s student in the Didactic Master’s program.

For the past six years, students from the University of Bucharest have consistently ranked on the SEEMOUS podium: Gold in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and, of course, in 2025.
In 2019, Dragoș Manea, a second-year Mathematics student, represented the University of Bucharest and won the competition with a maximum score and a gold medal. He had also participated in SEEMOUS 2018, earning a silver medal. That same year, Andrei-Robert Bâra, a first-year Mathematics student, finished 2nd-3rd, while Călin-Daniel Spiridon, a second-year student, took 4th place, both earning gold medals. Andrei-Alexandru Jelea, a first-year Mathematics student, won a gold medal as well, ranking 6th place while competing for the University Politehnica of Bucharest, where he was also a student. At the 2020 edition, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from March 3-8, reunited students from 14 universities in Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia and Romania. Three students from the University of Bucharest represented the institution.
All three students won gold medals, with Andrei-Robert Bâra earning the absolute first place with a maximum score. A second-year Mathematics student at the time, Andrei had also ranked 2nd-3rd in 2019. Dan-Ștefan Dumitrescu (5th place) and Andrei-Vlad Cațaron (6th place), both first-year Mathematics students, also won gold medals. More details about this event are available here.
The 2021 edition of SEEMOUS saw another remarkable performance from University of Bucharest students. Three students won gold medals, with Sergiu-Ionuț Novac securing first place overall. Dan-Ștefan Dumitrescu and Vlad-Nicolae Robu tied for second place, both earning gold, while Ana-Teodora Bercaru won a silver medal. More details about this event are available here.
At the 2022 edition, hosted in Belgrade, Serbia, from May 27 to June 1, the University of Bucharest was once again represented by three students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. All three secured podium positions: Gold medal – Vlad-Nicolae Robu, Silver medal – Andrei-Tiberiu Pantea, Bronze medal – Paul Florin Rebenciuc. The students were accompanied by Associate Professor Cornel Băețica, PhD, from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The 2023 edition of SEEMOUS continued the streak of excellence, with all three University of Bucharest students securing podium spots: Gold medals – Mario-Cosmin Drăguț and Octavian-Ionuț Joița, Silver medal – Divia-Petra Negoescu. A standout performance came from Mario-Cosmin Drăguț, who achieved the highest score in the entire competition.

At SEEMOUS 2024, the University of Bucharest won the grand prize of the competition. All six students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science placed on the podium: Gold medals – Ana Negoiță, Lucia Râșnoveanu, Mario Drăguț, Silver medals – Cezar Tulceanu, Răzvan Terpeneu, Bronze medal – Ștefan Strugariu.
