This autumn, the University of Bucharest, through its Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, is launching a new postgraduate programme in continuing professional education and development dedicated to the study of the Romanian diaspora.
Classes will take place from 23 October to 12 December 2026 in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online sessions. Applications must be submitted online between 13 and 17 October 2026.
The Diaspora Studies programme offers an interdisciplinary perspective on migration, diaspora, and transnationalism. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of identity, cultural, and social dynamics, as well as the relationship between diaspora, the state, and society.
The programme brings together eight complementary disciplinary perspectives, including political science, sociology, history, philosophy, philology, theology, diplomacy, anthropology, and communication studies. Courses are taught by professors from the University of Bucharest and specialists from partner universities and institutions in Romania and abroad.
The modules cover topics such as “The Political Representation of the Diaspora,” “Studying the Diaspora from a Sociological Perspective,” “The Dynamics of the Historical Romanian Diaspora,” “The Ontology and Biopolitics of National Identities: Deconstructions and Representations,” “Philological, Linguistic, and Literary Aspects of Diaspora Studies,” “The Religious Perspective on Diaspora Studies,” “Diplomatic Approaches to Diaspora Issues,” and “Diaspora Issues in Anthropology and Communication Studies.”
The programme is coordinated by Professor Emeritus Liviu Papadima, PhD, and is designed as an advanced course of study for those interested in diaspora research, as well as professionals working in fields where diaspora-related issues are relevant, including public administration, diplomacy, cultural institutions, non-governmental organisations, media and communication, research, and education.
It is also open to members of the diaspora and graduates interested in fields such as the humanities and social sciences, anthropology, communication, cultural studies, and European studies.
Upon completion of the programme, participants will receive a certificate issued by the University of Bucharest.
The tuition fee is 2,000 lei.
Online admissions are scheduled for 19 October 2026, and the final examination will take place on 18 December 2026.
