The University of Bucharest is, according to the first edition of the Times Higher Education – Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025, the leading university in Romania in terms of interdisciplinary scientific research. Internationally, the ranking, conducted by Times Higher Education in partnership with Schmidt Science Fellows, places the University of Bucharest in the 301–350 range.
The Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025 analysed the performance of 749 universities from 92 countries in interdisciplinary scientific research. The methodology consists of three pillars, each representing a stage in the life cycle of research projects, Inputs, Process and Outputs.
With a weight of 65%, Outputs focus on the reputation of researchers (25%), the quality of interdisciplinary scientific research (20%), the number of interdisciplinary scientific research publications (10%), the proportion of interdisciplinary research publications out of total publications (5%), and the societal impact of the research (5%).
Inputs account for 19% of the total score obtained by universities in the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025 and evaluate how interdisciplinary scientific research is funded, whether by industry (8%) or self-financed (11%), out of the total allocated research funds.
Lastly, Process, with a weight of 16% in the final score calculation, assesses how universities implement measures to enhance interdisciplinary research (4%), provide facilities (4%) and administrative support (4%) to interdisciplinary research teams, and maintain a promotion system that recognizes interdisciplinary research (4%).

The University of Bucharest celebrated 160 years since its creation through the Decree no. 765 from 4 / 16 July 1864 of Ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza. As a successor of the higher education institutions inaugurated by the Princely Academy of Bucharest (1694), the University of Bucharest has contributed and continues to decisively contribute to the development and modernization of Romanian teaching, science and culture.
Today, the university comprises 19 faculties offering: 95 bachelor’s degrees, 223 master’s programs, 23 doctoral schools in specific fields, an interdisciplinary doctoral school, over 50 centres and 9 research institutes.
