The University of Bucharest has joined the initiative of the Department for Durable Development and has installed, in the central hall of the UB Rectorate (90 Panduri Street), the Balance of Durable Development, a volumetric gadget shaped as a balance with several arms (similar to a chandelier with arms in movement) that promotes the Durable Development Objectives and offers online access (via QR code) to detailed information.
The initiative is part of the plan of actions Romania has implemented to support the 2030 Agenda and the set of 17 objective of Durable Development. The strategy supports the development of Romania on three main pillars, respectively economic, social and environmental. The strategy is citizen-oriented and focuses on innovation, optimism, resilience and trust that the state serves the needs of each citizen equitably, efficiently and in a clean environment, in a balanced and integrated manner.
Through the projects initiated, the University of Bucharest aims to become a modern, innovative and efficient institution, a university for future generations. In the last few years, the results registered by the academic community of the University of Bucharest, as well as the collaborations with different stakeholders have allowed the institutional recognition at national and international levels, as an active institution regarding the actions taken in the direction of the Durable Development Objectives.
Education, training and lifelong learning are indispensable for creating a culture of durability. Thus, the University of Bucharest is actively engaged in implementing the 17 objectives of durable development, which are by definition global objectives. Not lastly, having in mind an international perspective, we have to act fast and efficiently, encouraging people and companies to join us. These objectives help build a modern and dynamic economy, and also a world with high standards of living, encouraging equal opportunities and respecting the limited resources that our planet disposes of and protecting them for the future generations.
Durable development implies unreeling processes which contribute to the long-term improvement of living standards, by generating progress on an economic, ecologic and social plan, by ensuring a consonance between the socio-economical and natural environments.
One of the main objectives of the Department, with a direct impact in successfully applying the Strategy, is that of informing the public concerning the principles of durable development and the 17 objectives for durable development. The notoriety of the concept of durable development is the first premise towards opening a „cycle of understanding and entering into detail” of the Objectives of Durable Development, thus increasing the chances to establish an alliance with the population (in general) and youth (especially) in adopting a responsible behavior to fulfill these objectives.
For such profound changes, a major role falls upon the educational process, formal and nonformal alike, provided that it is not only informative but also formative and attractive. The Department of Durable Devlopment has developed, with this goal in mind, different instruments to initiate, familiarize and promote the idea of sustainability, among which many are addressed to youths (pupils, students, school and higher education institutions, organizations and experts who activate in the field of education, professors and parents).
