Haţeg Country is a unique territory, which has a distinct charm. It is situated at an ancient cultural and commercial crossroads, being often considered a miniature version of Transylvania.
It is a region where the geodiversity, the biodiversity and the interaction between Man and Earth have created a space which is rich in natural and cultural value. For Romania, the concept of an international geopark has opened up a new phase in approaching the conservation of the natural and cultural patrimony in the context of local development.
The creation of the International Geopark in Haţeg Land was initiated by the University of Bucharest. It is the result of detailed interdisciplinary studies and of a collaboration between universities, local administrations, companies, schools and associations. The Geopark aims to have a local development plan based on the conservation of the natural and cultural patrimony, capable of contributing to the socio-economic development and to the anchoring of our identity. The Geopark is a framework for cooperation and innovation which integrates research, educational and professional formation.
The Geopark is a territory which has natural and cultural values, a stable development programme, a brand which aims to provide a journey through time, in the 4.6 billion years history of the Earth, as well as a mood which is natural for all those who wish to participate to the rebirth of communities. It is also the meeting point which reunites all those who feel bound to the traditional values, be them actual or virtual inhabitants.
Hateg Country UNESCO Global Geopark comprises elements of particular geological interest, along with ecological, archaeological, historical and cultural elements.
The dwarf dinosaurs discovered in Haţeg Land are unique, and their scientific importance as well as their amenity is increased by the discoveries consisting of nests with eggs and dinosaur embryos, of mammals which lived in the same age as the dinosaurs and of a flying reptile (Hatzegopteryx), of the pterosaurs family.
Those who reach the Geopark can discover three nests with dinosaur eggs, as well as three dwarf dinosaur models, crafted with exceptional attention to detail by one of the most renowned paleo-artists in the work, the Canadian Brian Cooley. Also, a lot of interesting information about the past and the actual state of the area can be found out in six visiting and interpretation points: the “Wyverns, Dragons, Dinosaurs” exhibition at the Geopark Headquarters in Haţeg city, the Art and Science Centre in the General Berthelot commune, the Volcano House in the Densuş commune, the House of Miniatures in the Toteşti commune, the House of the Dwarf Dinosaurs and the House of Traditions in the Sînpetru village, the Sîntămăria Orlea commune, as well as on the themed tracks that can be followed by foot or on bike.

Starting with 2005, the Hateg Country UNESCO Global Geopark is the only geopark in Romania which is a member of the European and Global Geopark Networks. This status has been reconfirmed following international evaluation in the years 2008, 2010 and 2014. Starting with November 2015, the Hateg Country UNESCO Global Geopark has become an UNESCO site along with other geopark members of the Global Geopark Network, as part of the International UNESCO Programme for Geosciences and Geoparks.
Volunteers for the Geopark is one of the most successful programmes of the Geopark and has been acknowledged in 2015 by the ProPark Foundation as being the best volunteering programme in protected areas held in Romania. Its nucleus is made up of 200 young people, mostly students of the “I. C. Brătianu” National High School of Haţeg and pupils of the gymnasium schools on the Geopark grounds. In time, other people have joined them from the country, interested in partaking into the educational projects of the Geopark. The volunteering activity is done based on a contact and on an activity calendar, and its acknowledgement is guaranteed by international Voluntpass certificates and diplomas, issued by the University of Bucharest. Following a selection, the best volunteers may become ambassadors of the Geopark, a special status which allows them to represent the Geopark locally, nationally and internationally. The Ambassadors of the Geopark is a concept aimed at young people, which is unique on a global level.
